BIG PLAYS IGNITE STAUNTON RIVER

Staunton River continued the best start in its football history Friday night with a 49-24 victory over Alleghany in a non-district game in Moneta.

The Golden Eagles (4-0) set a school record for points in a home game, eclipsing a 48-point outburst against Bassett in the opening game of the season. Last week Staunton River had 57 points in a victory on the road, another school record for points.

Big plays from both teams contributed to most of the scoring.

Ben Perkins took the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to put Alleghany ahead, but the lead lasted scarcely 10 seconds when Kevin Martin hauled the ensuing kickoff back 70 yards for a Staunton River touchdown.

Alleghany was forced to punt on its first offensive possession, and Martin put another charge into the crowd by returning the punt 60 yards for a touchdown. Hence, the Golden Eagles had 14 points before ever running a play on offense.

But that was not the extent of the offensive fireworks. Jarrett Ferguson scored on a 41-yard run for the Golden Eagles and followed that with an 82-yard touchdown run. He finished with 240 yards on 10 carries.

Alleghany had its share of electrifying plays, too. Brian Carroll scampered 77 yards for a touchdown and Shannon Johnson scored on a 40-yard run for the Mountaineers (1-2). Carroll had 108 yards on eight carries and scored a pair of touchdowns.

Laurel Park 14, Gretna 12: The Lancers extended the Hawks' losing streak to a state-record 44 straight games in a non-district game in Gretna.

Gretna (0-4) broke the record held by Haysi from 1964-69.

The Lancers scored the winning touchdown on a 79-yard punt return by Derrick Hairston with 2:54 left in the game.

The score was close, but the Hawks won the statistical battle, outgaining Laurel Park (1-3) 185 yards to 74 yards.

Gretna held the early lead, 12-7, failing on both point-after touchdown passes.

The Lancers had eight kick returns for 214 yards in the game.

Carroll County 47, Grayson County 0: Billy Clougher, a junior running back, scored the first three touchdowns of the game as the Cavaliers (2-2) shut out the Blue Devils (1-2) in a non-district contest in Independence.

Clougher, a junior running back, rushed for 265 yards on 24 carries. He rushed for 251 of his 265 yards in the first half.

Carroll County held the Blue Devils to 99 yards of total offense, all of which was on the ground.

Magna Vista 58, Liberty 8: The Warriors scored the first 30 points and never looked back en route to a rout of the Minutemen in a non-district matchup in Bedford.

Travis Preston started the scoring for Magna Vista (3-0) with a 21-yard touchdown run and the two-point conversion run. The Warriors made it 14-0 in the first quarter when Chad Blackstock scored on a 10-yard run, but the two-point conversion run was stopped by Liberty.

Preston scored again on a 17-yard run in the second quarter, with Blackstock adding the two-point conversion run. It was Blackstock's turn next as he scored on a 5-yard run. Ceron Penn added the two-point run.

The Minutemen (2-2) tried to get back into the game when Duane Butler threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Robert Carson and a two-point conversion pass to Tim Parker. Magna Vista reasserted its dominance on the ensuing kickoff as Blackstock returned the ball 80 yards for a touchdown. Preston added another two-point conversion run to make it 38-7 at halftime.

The second half was more of the same as the Warriors added three touchdown runs.

Parry McCluer 17, Rockbridge County 14, OT: The Fighting Blues scored on a 22-yard field goal by Eric Catlett in overtime to defeat the Wildcats in Lexington.

The score was tied at 14-14 after a Parry McCluer touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. Rockbridge County (1-2) scored on its overtime posession but the touchdwon was nullified on an illegal block call. The Wildcats then missed the field goal. Parry MccLuer (3-1) was led by Robert Snyder sho rushed for 92 yards on 21 carries. Clay Hobson ran for 107 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown for the Wildcats.

Fieldale-Collinsville 24, Tunstall 18: The Trojans rang up 495 yards of total offense, but the biggest plays were made by the Cavaliers in a non-district victory in Dry Fork.

Kevin Franklin put Fieldale-Collinsville up 17-6 with an 85-yard kickoff return to lead off the second half. Diandre Bethel put the Cavaliers (2-2) on the board soon after that with a 60-yard touchdown run. Fieldale-Collinsville had 280 total yards, and actually had a 4 to 3 turnover disadvantage.

Deandre Strange had 18 carries for 196 yards for Tunstall (1-2). Rontae Williams had 12 for 110. Franklin led the Cavaliers with 72 yards on 18 carries.

Pocahontas 17, Fort Chiswell 6: The Indians relied on a ball-control offense to wear down the Pioneers and notch a Mountain Empire District victory in Fort Chiswell.

Pocahontas (3-1) kept the ball nearly the entire third quarter before Randy Shupe sealed the victory with a 7-yard touchdown run.

Fort Chiswell (2-2) ran only four offensive plays the entire third quarter. John Williams had the lone touchdown for the Pioneers on a 2-yard run in the second quarter.

Pulaski County 19, Anacostia, D.C. 12: In Dublin, sophomore Kwasi Scott ran for 107 yards and a touchdown as the Cougars continued their stranglehold over the Indians in a non-district game.

The victory kept Pulaski County (3-1) perfect in the series with the Washington, D.C.-based school. The two schools have met 12 times, with the Cougars winning all 12.

The Cougars got a huge effort from their defense, which held Anacostia (1-2) to 98 total yards.

Pulaski County jumped on top 7-0 early on Scott's 3-yard touchdown run. But Anacostia answered seconds later when Andre Williams took the ensuing kickoff 96 yards for a score. The Indians trailed 7-6 when their two-point conversion attempt failed.

Anacostia took its only lead in the second quarter on Willie Cooper's 27-yard TD pass to Eric James. The score stayed 12-7 when the visitors once again failed on a two-point conversion pass.

Brian Myers' 47-yard field goal enabled Pulaski County to draw within 12-10 at halftime.

The Cougars dominated the second half, limiting the Indians to only 26 yards total offense. Pulaski took the lead for good on Craig Hodge's 15-yard run in the third quarter, then got some fourth-quarter insurance when Myers connected from 27 yards.

Rural Retreat 50, Galax 0: The Indians rolled up 352 yards on the ground and romped over the Maroon Tide in a non-district matchup in Galax.

Junior running back Gene Fields ran for 154 yards on 16 carries, and also scored three touchdowns. Quarterback Jason Terry had a 24 yard touchdown run and passed for another.

Chris Graham completed 10 of 28 passes for 163 yards and one touchdown for the Shawnees.

Narrows 38, George Wythe 34: A touchdown with 1.9 seconds left in the first half may have been the difference as the Green Wave took a non-district game in Wytheville.

Trailing 22-14, George Wythe fumbled late in the first half. Narrows turned that into a 12-yard touchdown pass from David Turner to Dalton Smith.

The Maroons outscored the Green Wave 14-0 in the third quarter, cutting the score to 30-28 on a 27-yard run by quarterback Bubba Collins. Turner provide the winning margin with a 12-yard touchdown with 2:14 left in the game.

William Byrd 17, Bassett 14, OT: In Bassett, Chris Dowdy's 27-yard field goal in overtime lifted the Terriers to a pulsating non-district victory over the Bengals.

Byrd (2-1) rallied from a 14-0 deficit. The Terriers forced overtime when quarterback Frank English scored on a 1-yard sneak on fourth-and-goal and only 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Bassett (2-2) got the ball first in OT. The Bengals lost 5 yards on three plays and then saw Chauncey Norman's 32-yard field goal fall short.

Byrd wasted no time on its possession. The Terriers chose not to run a play and went with Dowdy, who drilled the 27-yard through the uprights.
