EAST TENNESSEE STATE controls Thomas Haskins to shut out the Keydets 38-0.
Freshman Brandon Walker rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown, and East Tennessee State handled Division I-AA All-America tailback Thomas Haskins as the Buccaneers crushed VMI 38-0 on Saturday at Memorial Center Stadium.
Walker's 24-yard touchdown dash came in the fourth quarter of the Southern Conference opener for both teams. East Tennessee State (3-1, 1-0 Southern Conference) had 229 yards on the ground, while the Keydets (0-3) managed only 90 yards rushing. Haskins, a junior, was held to 53 yards on 16 carries.
``We did not hit on any cylinders on offense today,'' said Bill Stewart, the Keydets' coach. ``I guess we are just relying on Thomas Haskins too much.''
Brian Edwards started the scoring for the Buccaneers with a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and an 8-yard run in the second. Jerry Chapman kicked a 24-yard field goal and Shon Galloway returned a fumble for a touchdown to make the score 24-0 at the half.
``What looked like a pretty good defense at Ole Miss and William and Mary didn't show up today. I am very disappointed with them.''
In the third, Anthony Stringfield caught a touchdown pass from Jim Ryan. Walker's touchdown run in the fourth quarter completed the scoring.
``I thought that we were ready to play,'' Stewart said. ``We had a good game plan.''
