ALLEGHANY TURNS BACK COVINGTON

Nan Showalter came off the bench to hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, sparking Alleghany to a 69-63 victory over visiting Covington in a battle of longtime rivals in Low Moor on Monday night.

With the Mountaineers (6-2) trailing by five, Showalter scored her only six points of the game to put her team ahead to stay.

Natasha Chapman led Alleghany with 20 points and Katie Craft added 16, going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line down the stretch to seal the victory. The Mountaineers were 10-of-11 from the line in the fourth period.

Melissa Page scored 16 points and Joanne Helton had 15 for the Cougars (5-4).

Christiansburg 45, Giles 33: Amber Reed scored 14 points and Lisa Dalton added 13 as the Blue Demons stopped the visiting Spartans in a non-district contest.

Christiansburg (5-3) led by four at the half before pulling away in the second half.

Kristen White led Giles (3-5) with eight points.

Galax 52, Rural Retreat 49: Keisha Ayers scored a game-high 17 points to pace the Maroon Tide in a win over the Indians in Rural Retreat.

Erin Kyle added 16 points and Tiffany Williams tossed in 10 for Galax (4-3) in the non-district matchup.

Martha Crigger scored 14 points, 10 in the second half, and Krystal Dale added 10 for Rural Retreat (4-3).

Rural Retreat trailed 32-20 at the half, but outscored Galax 17-5 in the third period to tie the game at 37-37. The Indians had a chance to tie the game at 50 from the line, but missed the second shot of a 1-and-1 and Galax sealed the game with two foul shots.

Radford 47, Narrows 43: After a sluggish start, the Bobcats turned it around in the second quarter and went on to beat the Green Wave in Narrows.

Charlee Taylor led Radford (6-4) with 27 points, 12 of those in the second quarter. Suzanne Webb kept Narrows (7-3) in the game, scoring 21 points.

Martinsville 50, Liberty 31: Jamie Ferrington scored 16 points and Erica Brandon added 13 as the Bulldogs upended the Minutemen in Bedford in a non-district game.

Brandon had nine of her points in the second half, when Martinsville (4-0) outscored Liberty 31-8.

Teona Callahan scored nine points to pace the Minutemen (2-8).

Bassett 76, Dan River 20: Heather Miller led four scorers in double figures with 18 points as the Bengals ripped the Wildcats in a non-district game in Bassett.

Megan Washburn, Jamie Roberts and Latasha Copening each added 10 points for Bassett (9-1). Miller scored 12 of her points in the first quarter and Roberts had all of hers as the Bengals shut out the Wildcats 34-0. Miller also pulled down nine rebounds and passed for five assists.

Sylvita Wilson paced Dan River (0-7) with nine points.
