The Commonwealth Transportation Board has approved spending $5.3 million on a new fog-light system for Interstate 64 across Afton Mountain in Augusta and Albemarle counties.
The board earlier this month gave the go-ahead to a contract with S. Rock/Eastabrook Corp. of Aldie to install the the system. Work is expected to begin in October.
The new lights will be brighter than those that now line the pavement. The new system also will include a computer to adjust the brightness of the lights according to the level of motorists' visibility. The lights, controlled by five visibility sensors, will be embedded in the road as they are in the current system.
Ten electronic message signs also will be installed to give motorists information on traffic accidents, road construction and weather conditions.
The board said the system adds to the growing number of intelligent transportation systems already in use in the state, including the weigh-in-motion truck scales at Daleville.
