PUBLIC PULSE

*The Pulaski County Board of Supervisors will pay off the remaining debt on the Louisa P. Chrisley Fitness Center at Pulaski County High School. The 13,900-square-foot facility named in memory of a popular track coach and teacher at the school handles physical education classes during the school day and is open to the public from 3:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Contributors gave $295,542 in cash to the project and $147,626 in goods and services, which covered all but $40,000 still owed to Signet Bank. The board voted 3-2 to pay off the $40,000, with Jerry White, Joe Sheffey and Frank Conner favoring White's motion and Bruce Fariss and Charles Cook voting "no," favoring some other approach to helping the center committee.

Fariss expressed concern over Adelphia Cable charges to county residents, saying they are higher than comparable cable offerings in nearby localities, and wants a breakdown from Adelphia on its expenses. The board also passed his motion to have the administrative staff look into coordinating purchases of materials and equipment with the county school system and other governmental departments to try to save money.

Cook reported that work on reopening and improving the Draper Mountain Overlook on U.S. 11 could start as early as mid-May, if federal funding under a grant program comes in on time. The board will look at costs and benefits of the project at its Oct. 28 meeting.
