Mike Anderson, a longtime coach on the U.S. Tennis Association circuit, has been named men's tennis coach at Radford University.
Anderson, 47, has coached USTA adult league teams in the New River Valley since 1985. He also founded the tennis committee at Blacksburg Country Club.
Anderson succeeds Bruce Harrison, who compiled a 77-59 record in six seasons at Radford before accepting a similar position at VMI this month.
GOLF King, Sprinkel share 10th in tournament
Billy King and Jeff Sprinkel of Blue Hills Golf Club finished tied for 10th in the Titleist/Footjoy Professional-Assistant Championship in Williamsburg.
Bobby McIver and Rob McNamara of Farmington Country Club won the title with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff with the 1995 champions, Ron Scales and Glenn McCloskey of the University of Maryland Golf Course. King and Sprinkel finished seven strokes back in a five-way tie at 3-under 141.
Jay Hardwick and Billy Good of Virginia Tech won the 75-yard wedge/bunker shot skills competition when their combined shots stopped 18 inches from the cup.
* Radford University's Phil Bowers won medal honors in a playoff with Virginia Commonwealth's Miguel Reyes with a birdie on the first hole of the State Division I Intercollegiate Golf Championship at The Homestead.
Bowers, a freshman from Harrisonburg, had a two-day total of 148 in his first collegiate tournament. Radford finished fourth in the team competition - the Highlanders' best showing as a Division I entry - and VMI was last. Virginia Commonwealth won the event going away after three golfers posted 1-over 73s in the final round.
Brian Hill, a Northside High School graduate, shaved nine strokes off his first-day score with a 74 for Radford. Tommy Lesperance, a George Mason freshman from Glenvar, cut 11 strokes and also carded a 74.
SOCCER Roanoke falls in ODAC matchup
Carrie Hall scored the first three goals as Randolph-Macon shut out Roanoke College 4-0 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's game in Ashland.
Jennifer Johns had the final goal for the Yellow Jackets (8-1, 4-0). Roanoke is 5-3, 2-1.
* Angela Hucles scored 50 seconds into the game and 11th-ranked Virginia held on for a 1-0 victory over Virginia Tech in a women's game in Charlottesville.
