Explore Park on Monday is expected to announce it has received a large cash gift for building a welcome center to replace a small ticket booth on the main road into the park.
Crews are building a road into the park from the Blue Ridge Parkway. The new road, to be called the Roanoke River Parkway, will lead to the 7,000-square-foot welcome center, which is expected to have a gift shop, restrooms and visitor information.
Both the road and center will open by April 1998, said Chet Simmons, Explore Park's general manager.
