A number of Roanoke citizens have been honored by the Roanoke Neighborhood Partnership for their civic activities.
Mayor David Bowers presented plaques and certificates last week at the partnership's 16th awards celebration at Mountain View Center.
One woman - Betty Hall - was given awards in two categories for her activities in the Ridgewood neighborhood. She received the Julian King Neighborhood Leadership Award and the Newsletter Award along with Jean Bevins, her co-editor of the Ridgewood News.
Others nominated for the Julian King Award were given certificates of recognition: Petie Cavendish of Old Southwest and Charles Hancock of Garden City.
Other award winners were:
Business Partner - Louis Scutellaro, president of Mario Industries, a household lighting industry that has supported the Wasena Neighborhood Forum in many community activities.
Youth Volunteer - Amy Martin, a Patrick Henry High School student who works with several groups in the Garden City area.
City Partnership - Dan Henry, urban forester for the city, who has worked with residents of Day and Marshall avenues in their Block Pride Campaign, a cleanup and beautification project.
Barbara Dowdy - Dennis Tinsley of Garden City, for heading a campaign to get a drainage plan to help prevent flooding in the neighborhood.
Two other nominees received certificates: Trina Cline of Old Southwest and Chris Miller of Wasena.
Community Life - Ted Tucker, a city planner, for leading a campaign to remove junk cars from public view throughout the city.
The plaque given to Tucker says that since spring, owners of more than 650 junk cars have been cited and more than 90 percent of the vehicles have been moved. Tucker's committee is receiving more than 100 new complaints each month.
The neighborhood partnership is an umbrella agency for citizens groups in the city.
