2 PCHS STUDENTS ARE NAMED MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SEMIFINALISTS

Pulaski County High School has two seniors who are semifinalists for National Merit Scholarship competition.

Wren Lanier of Fairlawn and Shane Moses of Newport were among more than 1.1 million students in some 20,000 high schools who took the preliminary qualifying test as juniors last year. About 90 percent of the semifinalists usually meet the requirements for finalist standing and become eligible for a $2,000 National Merit Scholarship and other corporate or college-sponsored scholarships.

"This is the first time I can recall that we've had two semifinalists," said senior counselor Cindy Watson. Both are also students at the Southwest Virginia Governor's School.

Lanier, who has worked on the school's newspaper and yearbook, is interested in studying journalism. She has also been in the theater program, and was a resident Governor's School student in Richmond last summer studying humanities. She is in her 12th year with Girl Scouts.

Moses wants to study aerospace engineering "but I may go to law school afterward," he said. He qualified to have an exhibit in last year's state science fair, presented a paper last year at the Virginia Junior Academy of Science, and is president of the United Methodist Youth Fellowship at his church.

His brother, Brooks Moses, was a National Merit finalist at Pulaski County High School four years ago. Semifinalists must complete a 500-word essay and meet other requirements to move to finalist ranking. The selection of finalists will be announced in mid-February.
