RADFORD GETS COMMITMENT IN BASKETBALL

Radford University received its third men's basketball verbal commitment when 6-foot-5 forward Mike Gibson of Mount Vernon High cast his lot with the Highlanders.

Gibson averaged 14 points and seven rebounds per game for Mount Vernon.

Gibson joins 6-6 Jason Williams of Bladensburg, Md., and 6-foot Byron Hall of Falls Church in settling on Radford. If all three sign as expected when the early period starts Nov. 13, Radford will have used all its available scholarships.

In other sports news in the region:

* The Roanoke Express hits the ice for training camp Oct. 6 at the Roanoke Civic Center.

The team announced Wednesday that players will report to Roanoke Oct. 5 for meetings and physical examinations. The team will train on-ice Oct. 6-8 before opening the exhibition schedule at Richmond on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

The Express plays home exhibitions against the South Carolina Stingrays on Oct.11 at 7:30 p.m. and against the Charlotte Checkers on Oct.13 at 2:45 p.m.

COLLEGES Roanoke blanks Sweet Briar

Roanoke College's field hockey game won its fourth straight game with a 2-0 victory over Sweet Briar in Salem, the Maroons' third straight shutout.

Tina Boyce scored both goals and goalie Jen Pohanka made five saves.

Roanoke, which has outscored opponents 22-2 in the four wins, is 4-2 overall, 2-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Vixens are 1-4, 0-3.

* Troy Washington's penalty-kick goal propelled Radford to a 1-0 victory over Liberty in a Big South soccer match played at Dedmon Center Stadium.

Washington's goal came at the 12-minute mark after a handball by the Flames in the box. It was one of just four shots for Radford (4-4-1, 1-1). Sophomore goalkeeper Sacha Drouin made four saves for the Highlanders. Liberty is 4-2, 0-2.

* Petur Jonsson scored a school-record four goals and fellow Icelander Surrir Surrirrson added two as Emory & Henry beat Washington and Lee 7-2 in men's soccer at Emory. Bill Sigler gave Washington and Lee (3-1 overall, 1-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) a 1-0 lead, but the Wasps (2-3-1, 2-1-1) scored the next six goals.

* Washington and Lee women's soccer and lacrosse coach Jan Hathorn has been chosen to participate the NCAA's Youth Education through Sports (YES) soccer clinic. Hathorn, who has coached the Generals for 10 years, will attend the clinic at the University of Richmond on Dec. 14 in conjunction with the NCAA Division I men's soccer championship.

* In Ferrum, Justin Holochak and J.R. Hughes each had a goal and an assist to lead Hampden-Sydney (4-3-1) to a 3-0 men's soccer victory over Ferrum (2-5).
