ROBBER SHOOTS MAN AT ROANOKE ATM

A Roanoke man told police he was shot and robbed early Wednesday by a masked assailant as he used an automated teller machine on Williamson Road Northwest.

Robert Leonard Brown, 53, of Rutherford Avenue Northwest was listed in satisfactory condition at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital after being shot in the right side.

According to police reports, Brown was at an ATM in the 3400 block of Williamson Road about 2 a.m. Wednesday when a man wearing a ski mask approached him and demanded money while brandishing a .38-caliber pistol.

Brown said he gave the man $20, but the man demanded more. At that point, Brown told police, he tried to grab the man's gun. The two men struggled, but the robber regained control of the gun. The robber then shot Brown in the side as Brown turned to run to his car.

Police learned of the incident after being called to the hospital. They have made no arrests.

In other police reports Wednesday:

*A 4-year-old boy was shot in the ankle with an air pistol while riding his bicycle outside his Campbell Avenue home about 7 p.m. Tuesday. The boy, whom police did not identify, was not seriously injured.

Police charged a nearby resident, 21-year-old Brian Tyrone Hollinghead, with assault and battery. Hollinghead told police that the shooting was an accident, although he added that the child had struck him with a rock earlier, police said.

*Two men reported being shot with an air gun within a half-hour span Tuesday afternoon while working on homes in different parts of the city. A car that was believed to be involved in the first drive-by BB shooting on McDowell Avenue Northwest was spotted by police in the area of the second shooting, on Winchester Avenue Southwest.

The driver acknowledged that two of his passengers had fired the shots from the car, but said he had dropped them off earlier. Neither man was seriously injured. There have been no arrests.
