BURK, Harry Armstead, 81, of Radford, died Tuesday, September 24, 1996, in a Radford retirement home. He was a retired employee of the Southwest Virginia Gas Company. Dr. Foreman was born in Columbus, Ohio on September 6,1929 to the late Ira and Helen Marie McCarthy Foreman. Dr. Foreman was a retired Associate Professor in the Mining and Minerals Engineering Department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University from 1957-1989. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy E. MOORE, Walter Edward Cladek, (``Ed''),68, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, September 25, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Lillian H. (Peg); three sons and daughters-in-law; and four grandchildren, Vicki and David Moore, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Karen and Howard Moore, Kristen and Kyle, Stanardsville, Wendy and Jey E. (Jed) Moore, Scot and David, Mesa, Ariz. He received his Bachelors Degree at the University of New Hampshire and his Masters and Ph.D. Degrees at the University of Wisconsin. In 40 years at VPI & SU, he taught and did research in anaerobic microbiology in the Department of Biology, Department of Biochemistry, Department of Veterinary Science. He was founder and Head of the Anaerobe Laboratory, Head of the Department of Anaerobic Microbiology from 1970 until 1985, and University Distinguished Professor of Anaerobic Microbiology. He was internationally acclaimed for his research and publications concerning the anaero bic bacteria of human infections, the intestinal flora of man, the microbiology of periodontal diseases, and the taxonomic relationships among anaerobic bacteria. He was Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Systematic Bacteriology and recipient of the Kimble Award from the U.S. Conference of Public Health Laboratory Directors for his contributions to laboratory methods important to public health, the Bergey's International Award for his contributions to taxonomy and nomenclature of anaerobic bacteriology, the Porter Award for his contributions to the importance of proper maintenance and use of culture collections, and the Becton-Dickenson Award for his contributions to the elucidation of the importance of anaerobic bacteria in human infections. At his retirement in 1995, the culture collection that he had developed and maintained for research in anaerobic bacteriology, the largest of its kind in the world, was distributed to researchers world-wide so that its use to the scientific community could be perpetuated. He served the international bacteriological community through membership on numerous taxonomic committees and subcommittees. There will be a service at 3 p.m. Saturday, September 28, 1996, at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, Blacksburg, with the Rev. Clara Fisher-Davies officiating. WHITMAN, Frederick E., 73, of Roanoke, died Monday, September 23, 1996, at his home. Born on March 1, 1923, in Roanoke, he was a son of the late Robert B. Whitman and the late Lillian Scranton Whitman. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of Southview United Methodist Church. WILKERSON, Janet Simpson, 52, of Vinton, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, September 25, 1996, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a life long member of Belmont Presbyterian Church and was preceded in death by her father, H. L. (John) Simpson; and a brother, Wm. Caroll Simpson. Surviving are her husband, Wayne W. Wilkerson; a daughter, Ronda Renea Wilkerson, of the home; a son, Troy Shane Wilkerson, Roanoke; mother, Ruby B. Simpson, Roanoke; brothers and a sister-in-law, Danny L. and Harue Simpson, Corpus Christi, Texas, Johnny Ray Simpson, Roanoke; sisters, Joyce S. Myers, Kay S. Carroll, both of Vinton; mother-in-law, Pauline Wilkerson, Roanoke; sisters-in-law and their husbands, Sheryl and Mike English, Roanoke, Debi and Terry Hopkins, Hardy; sister-in-law, Norma Jean Simpson, Lansing, Kansas; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Belmont Presbyterian Church at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 28, 1996, with the Rev. Elliott Hipp officiating. Burial will be in the King Family Cemetery, Bent Mountain. Friends may call at Oakey's Vinton Chapel after 1 p.m. Thursday.

WILSON, Patricia Ann born November 23, 1940 in Roanoke, Va., passed away on September 24, 1996 after a brief illness in Stamford, Conn., she is the daughter of Ollie Thompson and the late Olivia Matthews. Pat graduated from Lucy Addison High School and attended nursing school. She resided in Stamford Conn. for 35 years while employed at Pitney Bowes for 27 years. A member of Little Zion Church of God in Christ. She was an organist for many years, she served on the Good Shepard Board in addition to teaching sunday school. She leaves to mourn three children; William, Karen and Timothy all of Stamford, Conn., two granddaughters, Taveona and Tashona of Stamford, Conn, 2 brothers, Edward Matthews of Waycross, Ga; and Tracey Thompson of Flint, Mich., she is predeceased by her husband Edward Wilson. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 28, 1996 at 9 a.m. at the Wilson Memorial Church, Stamford, Conn. Burial will follow at the Woodland Cemetery in Stamford Conn.
