SPECIAL EVENTS
The Salvation Army, an evangelical Christian church and service agency established in Roanoke since 1887, plans a celebration Sunday beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a gospel sing at headquarters at 724 Dale Ave. S.E. Several former corps commanders, including Majs. James Hipps and Marshall and Barbara Clary and Capts. Dean and Pamela Hinson, will be present. Music will be by a youth band from the Tidewater area. During the summer, new commanding officers Capts. Steve and Connie Long assumed their duties. Morning worship will be followed by luncheon for the community.
St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 1201 Hardy Road in Vinton, will celebrate its 25th anniversary of organization Oct. 12 and 13. The event will begin with a Saturday night dinner at D.J.'s Restaurant in Roanoke. Call 342-1715 by Friday for reservations. The Sunday program at 11 a.m. will include participation by all four former pastors, the Rev. James W. Sheldon, the Rev. Robert W. Busch, Chaplain Patrick McLaughlin and the Rev. Church Women United, an ecumenical and multiracial group, will feature CHIP, the Children's Health in Partnership program, at its meeting Friday. Those attending the meeting at Westhampton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) are requested to bring books for infants and children under 4. The CWU meeting will begin at 10 a.m. with Ruth Deverter, a supporter of CHIP, the speaker. The church is at 2515 Grandin Road S.W.
Valley Word Ministries, 1928 Loch Haven Drive, will sponsor a Unity of the Faith Conference tonight through Saturday. It will be led by Decatur, Ga., evangelists Henry and Clara Smith. Thursday and Friday night services begin at 7:30, with the Sunday night worship beginning at 7. On Friday and Saturday mornings at 10, the guest leaders also will lead events with a women's luncheon at the Sheraton Inn on Saturday. Call 342-4269 for details.
Spanish worship services for the growing Roanoke Valley Hispanic community will begin Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 301 Mountain Ave. S.W., 9:30-10:30 a.m., led by the Rev. Denise Rotival Huffman, a United Methodist pastor and linguist. Call 989-6046 or 342-3501 for more information in either English or Spanish. Huffman said the services are open to anyone interested in Spanish culture. The new group also is seeking musicians to lead worship on a regular or occasional basis. Following the first service Sunday, a social time with ethnic refreshments is planned.
An interracial Christian fellowship sponsored by the Roanoke District of the United Methodist Church has been reorganized and will meet tonight at 7 at the United Methodist Home, 1009 Old Country Club Road N.W. The Willing Workers Club of High Street Baptist Church will present a program of international costumes Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. The church is at 2302 Florida Ave. N.W. The club is marking 15 years of community service.
Salem Baptist Church, under the direction of Paul Welleford, its minister of music, is expanding its program to include all art forms such as drama, liturgical dance and crafts. Beginning with children and youth, the plan is expected eventually to include older members who will be encouraged to use their talents in cooperative projects to promote Christianity. Lynn Haven Baptist Church is beginning rehearsals for its annual Singing Christmas Tree programs to be presented Dec. 12-15. Bishop Joseph E. Pennel Jr., new spiritual and administrative leader of Virginia Conference United Methodists, will preach at the annual meeting of Roanoke District congregations Oct. 13 at 2:30 p.m. The meeting will be in Vaughn Chapel of Ferrum College. Pennel has come from Nashville, Tenn., to Richmond headquarters.
Heritage Day, an annual family program to highlight Church of the Brethren history, religion and customs, is scheduled Oct. 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the denominational conference center, Camp Bethel in Botetourt County. Congregational ministries and displays from throughout the Virlina District will be featured. |SPIRITUAL EDUCATION| Bethlehem Bible College, a ministry of Bethlehem Baptist Church, has extended fall registration through Oct. 15. Classes are held at 1578 Golfside Ave. N.W. Classes to train evangelical Christians for leadership are held on Mondays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and include Old Testament Survey, Church Administration, Homiletics and studies of the gospels of Matthew and Luke. Strengthening Marriage, a three-session class with an evangelical Christian perspective, will begin Oct. 6 at West Salem Baptist Church, 500 Turner Road in Salem. It will be led by Brett Roach, licensed professional counselor. Meetings will be evenings from 6 to 8 on Oct. 6 and 13 and on Oct. 9 from 6:30 to 9:30. Kenneth Hughes of Peoria, Ill., the guest preacher. Hughes has conducted meetings in Germany, Russia and Colombia. Services will start at 7 on Friday and Saturday nights and at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Drew Mentzer, a former minister of Edgewood Christian Church now living in Knoxville, Tenn., will return for revival services Sunday through Wednesday. A nursery will be open for the Sunday services at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. and at 7 p.m. on weeknights.
Evangel Foursquare Church, 612 Bullitt Ave. S.E., has scheduled revival services Oct. 13 through 16 with Dea Warford, a Los Angeles evangelist, preaching on Sunday at 11 a.m. and nightly at 7. He has conducted meetings for youth and the sick in 23 states.
At Ebenezer Baptist Church, 7049 Thirlane Road, the Rev. J.D. Holland of Lovely Valley Baptist Church in Franklin County will lead revival services Monday through Oct. 4. He will speak at 7:30 p.m. nightly, with music by the choirs of several churches.
