Crystal English's last-minute heroics saved the game as Staunton River pulled out a 48-47 victory over Heritage in a Seminole District game Thursday night in Moneta.
English connected a 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining in the game to give the Golden Eagles a one-point lead, then blocked a Pioneers field-goal attempt to seal the victory. She had 11 points in the game.
Penny Forrest scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for Staunton River.
The Pioneers mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter after trailing 39-30. Michelle Anderson scored six of her 16 points and Kim Moss scored eight of her 12 in the final period.
Alleghany 57, Salem 42: Natasha Chapman scored 19 points and Nikki Brown added 15 as the Mountaineers surprised the host Spartans in a Blue Ridge District matchup.
Alleghany took a 19-9 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Carrie Brown had 11 points for the Mountaineers.
Sarah Palmer scored 21 points, including three 3-pointers, for Salem.
Liberty 46, Appomattox County 43: Selena Byers hit a layup with 30 seconds to play as the Minettes rallied to beat the Raiders in a Seminole District matchup in Appomattox.
Byers scored a game-high 22 points for Liberty, which trailed 17-9 after one quarter. The Minettes held Appomattox County to 13 points in the second half.
Teona Callaham added 12 points for Liberty. Twanna Scott had 13 to lead the Raiders.
Lord Botetourt 50, Rockbridge County 29: Sara Moore scored all of her 16 points in the second and third quarters to lead the Cavaliers to a Blue Ridge District victory over the Wildcats in Lexington.
Moore scored nine points in the second quarter and seven in the third to help Botetourt (9-1, 3-1) lead 40-18 through three quarters.
The Wildcats (0-10, 0-4) could not get their shots to drop in the first quarter, but were able to hold the Cavaliers to five points with solid defense. Elizabeth Faulkner led the Wildcats with 13 points.
George Wythe 55, Holston 47: Megan Johnson scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Alethea Lemieux had 10 rebounds as the Maroons downed the Cavaliers in a Hogoheegee District game in Wytheville.
George Wythe (5-5, 2-2) led 28-25 at halftime, then outscored Holston 15-6 in the third period to pull away. The Maroons shot well from the field, but poorly from the free-throw line, hitting only 14 of 40 attempts.
Tighe Martin scored 13 points for Holston.
Patrick County 40, Carroll County 23: The Cougars put it together in the second half with some transition baskets and topped the Cavaliers in a non-district game in Stuart.
Patrick County (10-1) trailed 12-10 at halftime after Carroll County went scoreless in the first quarter, but rallied behind nine points from Anitra Huff and eight from Jennifer Jessup.
Carla Newman had nine points for the Cavaliers (3-7).
William Byrd 41, Christiansburg 26: The Terriers outscored the Demons 17-4 in the third quarter to break open an otherwise tightly contested Blue Ridge District game in Vinton.
William Byrd (9-1, 5-0) led by seven points at halftime. The Terriers were led by Brandy Allen's 15 points and seven rebounds. Stephanie Parnell added 13 points for Byrd.
Auburn 53, Fort Chiswell 52: The Pioneers inbounded the ball with 4.9 seconds left, but could not get off a shot against the Eagles and dropped a one point non-district decision in Riner.
The lead changed hands three times in the last 47 seconds, the final time on a jumper by Auburn's Susan Wirt from the lane with 11 seconds to play.
Fort Chiswell made 34 trips to the free-throw line; Auburn (5-6) had 16.
Wirt finished with 11 points and teammate Laura Underwood poured in 21. Amber Gunter led Fort Chiswell with 16 points.
Narrows 73, Pocahontas 47: Tara Collins led all scorers with 29 points and teammate Suzanne Webb added 18 as the Green Wave overwhelmed the Indians in a Mountain Empire District game in Pocahontas.
Pam Nunley scored 16 points and Krista Jennings had 11 for Pocahontas (1-8, 0-5), which managed only 15 rebounds in the game as Narrows (9-3, 1-4) controlled the boards.
Galax 63, Bland 39: The Maroon Tide used pressure defense and superior rebounding to take control early in a Mountain Empire District game in Bland.
Erin Kyle led the way with 15 points for Galax, which had 11 players in the scoring column.
Bland (0-7) got a team-high 11 points from Leslie Carroll.
Grayson County 44, Rocky Gap 41: The Blue Devils hit seven free throws in the final quarter to hold off the Eagles in a Mountain Empire matchup in Rocky Gap.
Grayson County got out to an early lead, but Rocky Gap tied it by halftime as it held the Blue Devils (3-7, 2-1) scoreless for six minutes in the second quarter.
Center Sarah French had 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Eagles (5-6, 1-2). Grayson County's Lindsey Carico led all scorers with 16.
Wednesday's game
Floyd County 76, Graham 26: Julie Sowers and Sara Conner each scored 11 points to pace the Buffaloes to an easy non-district victory in Bluefield. Floyd County, ranked fourth in Timesland, is 9-1.
