John Ballein and Cheryl Gasper have been elevated to new positions on the Virginia Tech athletic staff.
Ballein, who has worked with Tech athletics for eight years, was appointed assistant athletic director for football operations. Gasper, also an eight-year employee of the department, was named director of facilities and game management.
Ballein will be responsible for all operations dealing with the football program. He also will continue his duties as an assistant to football coach Frank Beamer and as departmental recruiting coordinator.
In her new role, Gasper will oversee game management for Tech's 21-sport varsity program. She also will continue her duties of coordinating scheduling, maintenance and renovations at all Tech athletic facilities. She succeeds Don Perry, who resigned in August.

* Lorraine Taurassi scored with 8 minutes, 11 seconds remaining in regulation as Washington and Lee (5-0, 3-0 ODAC) downed Randolph-Macon Woman's College 1-0 in a women's soccer game in Lynchburg.
* Lisa Franzino scored a hat trick and Meredith Arnott scored a goal and added an assist as Roanoke shut out Sweet Briar 6-0 in a women's soccer game in Salem. The Maroons (6-3, 3-1 ODAC) outshot the Vixens (3-4-1, 0-4-1) 30-5.
* Elizabeth Minchard and Holly Osmond each scored as Radford defeated Appalachian State 2-0 in a non-conference field hockey game at Radford. The Highlanders (6-3) outshot Appalachian State 18-13.
