Natasha Chapman scored 19 points and Nikki Brown added 15 as Alleghany surprised Salem 57-42 in a Blue Ridge District game Thursday night at the Spartans' gym.
Alleghany took a 19-9 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Carrie Brown had 11 points for the Mountaineers.
Sarah Palmer scored 21 points, including three 3-pointers, for Salem.
In other games Thursday night:
Lord Botetourt 50, Rockbridge County 29: Sara Moore scored all of her 16 points in the second and third quarters to lead the Cavaliers to a Blue Ridge District victory over the Wildcats in Lexington.
Moore scored nine points in the second quarter and seven in the third to help Botetourt (9-1, 3-1) lead 40-18 through three quarters.
William Byrd 41, Christiansburg 26: The Terriers outscored the Demons 17-4 in the third quarter to break open an otherwise tightly contested Blue Ridge District game in Vinton.
William Byrd (9-1, 5-0) led by seven points at halftime. The Terriers were led by Brandy Allen's 15 points and seven rebounds. Stephanie Parnell added 13 points for Byrd.
Glenvar 59, James River 49: Erika Hale and Bonnie Willet scored eight points apiece in the decisive third period as the Highlanders held off a pesky James River squad in a non-district game at Glenvar's gym.
Hale finished with 18 points and Willet had 17 as the Highlanders (7-3) used an 11-point advantage in the third quarter to beat the Knights (2-6).
James River broke the press early in the game to keep it close as Amy Sprinkle got six of her 11 points in the first quarter. The Knights trailed 28-27 at the half. Nakia Burrell's 13 points paced the Knights.
