An 86-year-old man died early Friday, two days after he was hit by a car as he crossed a street in his Northwest Roanoke neighborhood.
George Hale of Thomas Avenue was struck by a car as he attempted to cross the street at Rugby Boulevard and 14th Street about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday. He was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he died from multiple injuries early Friday.
The driver of the car, 22-year-old Tanja Crawley of Roanoke, told police that she did not see the elderly man until her car struck him. Alcohol was not involved, police said, and there was no indication of excessive speed.
"It has all the appearances of a low-speed impact," said Lt. R.A. Bower of the Roanoke Police Department.
There is no stop sign for eastbound traffic on Rugby, the direction that Crawley was driving, at the intersection where the accident occurred.
After the accident, Crawley "stopped right away and did everything she was supposed to do," Bower said.
No charges have been filed, although police said they are still investigating the accident. A final report will be made later to Commonwealth's Attorney Donald Caldwell.
