AMSLER, Vivian Anna, 85, of Roanoke, wife of Dr. Kenneth Amsler, departed this life and entered the presence of the Lord at 3:30 a.m. Thursday, September 26, 1996. She was in Columbia Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem for 11 days. She was an exceptionally talented musician. She played the piano in church at age 10 and started teaching piano at age 16. She composed music and taught music courses at Wheaton College Conservatory of Music and at five Bible Colleges. She led college and church choirs. She was a wonderful loving wife and mother. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Dr. Kenneth A. Amsler; three sons, Dwight, David and Daniel; two daughters-in-law, Susan Jane Amsler and Judith Horning-Amsler; four granddaughters, Elizabeth Ann Golz, Laura Kate Zehr, Jennifer Susan Hall and Melissa Christine Amsler; three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel 3 p.m. Sunday, September 29, 1996, with Dr. Charles G. Fuller and Rev. Larry Eenigenburg officiating. Rev. Doyle Spence Minister of Music of First Baptist Church will sing. Burial will be in Mayflower Hills Baptist Church Cemetery, Roanoke County. BATEMAN, Jeryll Wayne, 50, of Roanoke, died Thursday, September 26, 1996. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Edward G. and Florence Coffey Bateman; and his brother, Edward Glenn Bateman Jr. He was chief engineer for Holiday Inn/Tanglewood. Surviving are his children, Richard Glenn Bateman, Salem, Brandon Wayne Bateman, Whitney Lynn Bateman, both of Roanoke; his sister and brother-in-law, Judy B. and Wallace Ferguson, Roanoke; his brother and sister-in-law, Robert S. BENNETT, Marvin Green, 61, of Bedford, passed away Thursday, September 26, 1996, at his residence. He was born March 7, 1935 in Campbell County, a son of the late Wealthy G. Bennett and Maude Pribble Bennett. He was preceded in death by a brother, Alexander C. Bennett. He was a retired employee of Ingersoll Rand, was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and a member of the Nicopolis United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Witt Bennett; a son and daughter-in-law, Troy D. and Deborah Bennett, Bedford; a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly B. and Roger Overstreet, Bedford; two brothers, Lloyd H. Bennett, Bedford, Lynwood C. Bennett, Evington; a sister, Edna B. Saunders, Evington; three grandchildren, Shawn and Amber Bennett, and Logan Overstreet. CAMPBELL, Ethel Aker, 82, of Marion, died Thursday, September 26, 1996, in Smyth County Community Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Warren C. Campbell of Marion; two sons, Leroy Campbell of Atkins and Bill Campbell of Marion; one daughter, Sally Salmon of Sandy Hook; one brother, Sherrill Aker of Atkins; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. EARLY, Katherine Harveycutter, 87, died Wednesday, September 25, 1996, at Burrage House in Boston, Mass., where she resided for the last two years. She moved there from Sun City, Ariz., where she had lived for a number of years after retiring from her job in the office of the comptroller for Frederick County, Md. Mrs. Early was the wife of William Monroe Early Jr. of Salem and Orange. Mr. Early, who died in 1958, was a banker in Salem and Orange and was President of the National Bank of Orange at the time of his death. Mrs. Early was the daughter of the late William Wade and Carolina Browne Harveycutter of Salem. She was the eighth in a family of nine children, and the last survivor. She grew up in Salem where she attended the public schools and was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She graduated in mathematics from William and Mary College at Williamsburg. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She also attended Roanoke College in Salem. She taught mathematics at Andrew Lewis High School in Salem prior to moving to Orange with her husband. After her husband's death she managed the business office at Woodberry Forest School in Orange County before accepting the position with Frederick County in Md. Throughout her life Mrs. Early was an avid golfer. She played as a young lady in Salem. After moving to Sun City she played almost every day. She had many trophies to her credit. She is survived by her daughter, Frances Browne Early, of Boston, Mas s.; three nieces and three nephews, Jane Litts Hough, William H. Robertson, and Cary Harveycutter of Salem, Frank P. Robertson of Boise, Idaho, Ann Litts Lucas of Richmond, Nancy Harveycutter Reynolds of Delray, Fla. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 10, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Orange, conducted by The Rev. George C. Estes. Interment will be in Graham Cemetery, Orange. FOLLMAR, Albert Harrison, Major, USMC Retired, 80, died Friday, September 27, 1996, at his home in Salem after a long illness. He was born in Norman, Okla., on February 17, 1916, and was preceded in death by his parents, Lettie Anne and Elijah Moses Follmar, and five brothers and sisters. He was a graduate of the University of Oklahoma and the Marine Corps Basic School in Philadelphia, Pa. During World War II, he served with the Fourth Marine Division in the Pacific. He was a longtime resident of Salem, where he owned Valley Realty. In addition, he was a member and past president of the Salem Sports Foundation, and served on various committees and commissions for the City of Salem. He is survived by his wife, Edna White Follmar; his daughter, Patricia Follmar Ivey; his grandson, David Christian Weber, of the home; his grandson, Matthew Jonathan Weber of Fayetteville, Ark., and his granddaughter, Jennifer Catherine Ivey of Locust Grove. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, September 30, at Calvary Methodist Church in Salem, with the Rev. Rob Colwell officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery and will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Bradley Free Clinic in Roanoke, Salem Rescue Squad, or the charity or organization of your choice.

GOURLAY, Amelia Stewart, 92, of Bedford, passed away Wed nesday, September 25, 1996, in the Carriage Hill Retirement Center. She was born February 29, 1904 in New York City, N.Y., a daughter of the late Robert Francis Stewart and Amelia Eliza Harra Stewart. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stewart I. Gourlay; a sister, Sarah S. Dunn; and a brother, Charles F. Stewart. She was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church, and attended the Art Student League of New York City and the Chicago Art Institute. She is survived by a niece, Mrs. John (Jacqueline) Gergen, Champaign, Ill.; a sister, Eleanor T. S. Hill, Fla.; and a number of other nieces and nephews; and grand-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, September 28, 1996, at 2 p.m. from the St. John's Episcopal Church, by the Rev. Dr. James Henry. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. HARMAN, Robert Benjamin, 64, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, September 27, 1996. He was a former truck driver with Associated Transport, Yellow Freight Company, and a member of the Teamsters. Surviving are his wife, Millie M. Harman; two daughters, Nancy Vest and Joanne Duncan; a son, Robert Junior Harman; six grandchildren, Angie, Tammy, David, Benji, Tracy, and Amber; and a great-grandson, Jonathon. MAXEY, Dennis H., 76, of Bassett, died Friday, September 27, 1996, at his home in South Bassett. Mr. Maxey was born in Kentucky on January 2, 1920, to the late Howard Lester Maxey and Nellie Johnson Maxey. Mr. Maxey had owned and operated South Bassett Cafe since 1956. Surviving are his wife, Mary N. Maxey of the home; one son, Dennis H. (``Danny"") Maxey of Fairys tone; one sister, Lola Green of Ferrum; two brothers, Jake Creed Maxey of Bassett and Lester Gray Maxey of Ferrum, and one grandchild, Reba McNeil. PETERS, Charles Alvin, 71, of Roanoke, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 26, 1996. He was a veteran of World War II and a retired Roanoke City Police Officer with 25 years of service. He is survived by his devoted wife, Delores Wells Peters; his loving daughters and son-in-law, Susie and John Pejakovich, Debbie Trent; two grandchildren, Bryan and Ashley; stepchildren, Kathy Blevins, Barbara Carlisle, Shirley Carlisle, Wayne Stanley; one brother, Everette Peters; sisters, Rachel Pring, Betty Snead, Florann Chittum; seven stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren. RHUDY, William F., (``Bill''), 78, of Fowler Street, Marion, died Thursday, September 26, 1996, in the Smyth County Community Hospital. Mr. Rhudy was a native of Grayson County, but had lived most of his life in Marion. He worked as a security guard at Brunswick for a number of years and was a lowboy operator with the Olman Construction Company. He was licensed as a pilot in 1952, and had been farming for many years. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Hash Rhudy, Marion; two daughters, Sue Rhudy, Lexington, Ky., Martha Rhudy, Altamonte Springs, Fla.; three sisters, Louise Delp Sturgill, Norton, Alleta Hines, Huntsville, Ala., Ester Rhudy, Huntsville, Ala. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Fred Jennings officiating. Interment will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Blue Springs Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Scotty Dolinger officiating. SIMPKINS, Alma Payne, 93, of Christiansburg, died Friday, September 27, 1996, at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Clara Payne; her husband, Lawrence Kessler Simpkins; three brothers, Leslie, Joe, and Tommy Payne; and two sisters, Hazel P. Hughes and Ethel P. Kinzer. Surviving are her daughters, Clara Mary Basnight and Louise P. McKissick and her husband, Harry; five grandchildren, Wayne Haymaker, Louise Flandreau, Mark McKissick, Timothy McKissick, and Susan M. Smith; one sister, Mary P. SMITH, Letha Miles, 81, of Salem, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 1996. She was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, and was retired from Frigid Freeze after 10 years of service. She also worked at Armou r and Company for many years. She was the widow of Frank J. Miles and Charles Homer Smith. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Louise Miles. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, James and Connie Miles of Daleville; daughters and son-in-law, Peggy and Willie Gardner of Hillsville, and Helen Fagg and Bonnie Spence of Salem; one brother, Jessie B. Mitchell of Christiansburg; three sisters, Hattie Duncan of Montvale, and Reba Duncan and Treva Cromer of Christiansburg; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and a special niece, Margaret Nichols of Cloverdale. TALLEY, Minnie H., 84, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, September 25, 1996 in a local convalescent center. She was the widow of Elmer Lee Talley; and predeceased by a daughter, Jacqueline T. Fairbanks. TAYLOR, Luther Craig, 88, of Catawba, passed away Friday, September 27, 1996. Luther was a life long resident of Craig County. He retired from driving a school bus after 25 years for the County. He was a man of laughter, fun and loved life. He always had a story to tell or a kind word to say. He was a cherished friend to many and a stranger to no one. He will be missed but always remembered. He is preceded in death by a granddaughter; Dana Taylor Garman. WHITSETT, Joyce Brown, 33, of Willis, passed away Friday, September 27, 1996, as the result of an automobile accident. She was employed by Wal-Mart in Christiansburg. Survivors include two sons, Tyler B. Whitsett and Reece B. Whitsett of Christiansburg; her parents, Curtis and Betty Lee Brown of Willis; two brothers, Tony C. Brown of Floyd and Jerry Lee Brown of Natural Bridge; her grandmother, Beatrice W. Hill of Willis, and her great-grandmother, Nola Hill of Willis. She was a long-time member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, and was preceded in death by one son, Nelson G. Wimmer. She is survived by her husband, Nelson J. Wimmer; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra W. and Robert Chapin, Christiansburg; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles S. and Regina Wimmer, Christiansburg; one brother, Grover C. Howell, Dublin; three grandchildren, Melissa A. Wimmer, Robb W. Chapin Jr. and his wife, Nancy, and Lisa A. Chapin; two great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Carroll A. Wimmer, Danville.
