SAN DIEGO SHUTS OUT HIGHLANDERS

San Diego blanked Radford 3-0 in the opener of the MetLife Soccer Classic in Norfolk on Friday.

The 14th-ranked Toreros (6-0-2) got goals from Jamie Munro, Nicholas Kalafatich and Ryan Patrick and advance to play Old Dominion on Sunday.

Goalie Sacha Drouin made five saves for the Highlanders (4-5-1), who will play the U.S. Naval Academy Sunday at 5 p.m.

In other news in the region:

* Freshman forward Tracy Powers scored two goals and Rachel Hash scored once as the Virginia Tech women's soccer team shut out Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne 3-0 in Blacksburg.

Goalies Hope Handley and Danielle De Serio combined on the shutout for the Hokies (4-3-1 overall, 2-0 conference).

* New River Valley Speedway will recognize its 1996 division champions at its awards banquet slated for Nov.16 at the Salem Civic Center.

Tickets, which are $20, can be purchased by calling the speedway office at 639-1700. The deadline for buying tickets is Nov.8.

In related news, the Winston 250, a postseason race offering over $30,000 in prizes, will be run Oct.19. Gates open at 9 a.m., with practice slated for 11 and qualifying at 1:15 p.m. The Winston 250 will start at 3 to cap the track's season.
