TRICKERY VAULTS JAMES RIVER TO 15-14 WIN OVER GLENVAR

A faked extra point and ensuing pass lifted James River to its first victory of the season Friday night, 15-14 over Glenvar.

Josh Peck got by a Highlanders defensive back and scored on a 48-yard pass from Travis Blankenship with 1:08 to play in the game. James River faked the extra point, with Blankenship whipping a pass to Brian LeFlore for the winning points.

Hunter Allen scored both of Glenvar's touchdowns on runs of 8 and 2 yards. He led the Highlanders (2-3) with 108 yards on 26 carries.

Fullback Lynward Twine had eight carries for 62 yards before separating his right shoulder when he was tackled early in the third quarter.

Blankenship completed 9 of 14 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns for the Knights (1-3).

GW-Danville 31, William Fleming 8: The Eagles stifled the Colonels offense for nearly the entire game in their 23 point non-district game in Danville.

William Fleming (1-4) was held scoreless until Lee Suggs broke an 84-yard run with 36 seconds left in the game, doubling the Colonels output for the night.

GW-Danville (4-0) quarterback Chanston Rodgers had 71 yards rushing on six carries and had two touchdowns.

Suggs finished with 115 yards on 17 carries for William Fleming.

Staunton River 28, Brookville 13: The Golden Eagles opened a three-touchdown first-half lead, then survived a Bees comeback after intermission to win a matchup of previously unbeaten Seminole District teams in Moneta.

``I haven't felt like this since we won the state [Group AA title] in track,'' said Staunton River tailback Kevin Martin, who rushed for 148 yards on 29 carries, and scored the clinching touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Golden Eagles (5-0, 1-0) had waltzed past four non-district opponents to start the season. Brookville (4-1, 0-1) entered the contest as the top-rated Group AA program in the state.

Bland County 50, Craig County 16: In New Castle, Keith Bourne scored three touchdowns and a two-point conversion as Bland took a 38-0 lead after three quarters and coasted past winless Craig County.

Craig County gained a measure of respectability when junior Jarvis Pauley scored on touchdown runs of 60 and 52 yards. The Rockets also blocked four Bland extra-point attempts.

Bourne carried 15 times for 163 yards. J.B. Lambert had seven rushing attempts for 119 yards and one touchdown. Bland had 542 yards in total offense.

E.C. Glass 21, Cave Spring 11: Antoine Carrington's 177 yards and touchdown pass lifted the Hilltoppers in a tight game at Cave Spring.

The Knights had 179 total yards, but held E.C. Glass to 94 yards on the ground, as well.

A fumble recovery set up a 31-yard field goal by Cave Spring's David Crisafi. Jeremy Nichols set up his own 2-yard touchdown run with a 57-yard run. He led the Knights (0-5) with 70 yards on 15 carries.
