County OKs adding Bland to jail pact
PULASKI - The Pulaski County Board of Supervisors last week approved the addition of Bland County to the New River Valley Regional Jail Authority.
The other current participants in the authority - the city of Radford and counties of Grayson and Giles - either have or are expected to pass similar resolutions approving the addition. Bland will pay $45,589 to make up its share of preliminary jail costs.
Wythe County officials are still trying to decide whether to join the authority or build their own jail to replace its 60-year-old jail, which is no longer adequate. Pulaski County Administrator Joe Morgan told the Pulaski County supervisors that time for such a decision is running out.
Wythe could still use the regional jail, as space permits, but would have to pay a set amount just as any other outside jurisdiction would to house prisoners there. The jail is to be built in Dublin if geological testing shows no site problems.

Reed Creek bridge work begins
WYTHEVILLE - Repair work has started on a bridge over Reed Creek west of Wytheville on U.S. 11 in Wythe County.
The work is in the westbound lanes. Westbound traffic will be funneled into one lane and detoured across the divided highway to the bridge in the eastbound lanes. The eastbound lanes will have two-way traffic during the repair work, which is expected to be completed late next spring.
Elk Knob Inc. of Pennington Gap has the $789,968 contract to reconstruct the bridge. Vehicles measuring more than 12 feet in width must detour around the work zone altogether.
