W&L'S 1ST WIN OF '96 IS BIG ONE

Tommy Rueger, filling in for injured Brooks Fischer, ran for two touchdowns and threw for one as Washington and Lee stunned previously unbeaten Centre 29-21 on Saturday in Danville, Ky.

Centre (3-1) scored on three consecutive possessions to take a 21-7 lead.

W&L (1-2) scored its first touchdown when John Bernazzi returned the kickoff 90 yards after the Colonels' first touchdown.

Rueger, a senior making his first start, scored on a 1-yard keeper with 8 minutes, 34 seconds left in the half. Matt Holbrook's extra-point try was blocked.

The Generals opened the second half with a 10-play, 71-yard drive that was capped by a 7-yard touchdown pass from Rueger to Nick Hodge. The two-point conversion run failed as Centre led 21-19.

Holbrook's 37-yard field goal put W&L in front to stay with 8:21 to play in the game. An interception by Travis Wisdom on the Colonels' next possession set up the Generals' final touchdown. A 30-yard pass from Rueger to Chas Chastain set up Rueger's second 1-yard TD scamper.

Rueger completed 12 of 29 passes for 185 yards, with seven of those throws going to Chastain for a total of 120 yards.
