BIG 4TH SPARKS RUSH TO WIN

The Roanoke Rush won a defensive struggle with Knoxville by scoring 18 points in the fourth quarter on the way to an 18-6 National Minor League Football victory Saturday night in Knoxville, Tenn.

Roanoke (7-1) scored first on a 13-yard run by Billy Pate.

Knoxville (3-4) tied the score when Bill Noce found Anthony Troutman for a 24-yard touchdown pass.

Darren Graham pushed the ball across from the 2-yard line to give Roanoke the lead for good. Defensive end Eddie Sloss sealed the victory with 42-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Roanoke meets West Virginia on Oct.5 for the Mid-Atlantic division title at Victory Stadium.

CROSS COUNTRY Roanoke women 2nd, men 3rd

The Roanoke College men's and women's cross country teams had strong finishes in the Maroon Invitational on the Elizabeth Campus.

The women's team finished second with 77 points, 55 behind Frostburg (Md.) State, which dominated both competitions. Shelli Stevens (Blacksburg High School) was the Maroons' top finisher, placing seventh with a time of 21 minutes, 36 seconds.

The men finished third among five teams and were led by David Angell (Franklin County), who placed sixth.

The meet also included a high school competition that featured 10 schools in the boys' race and eight schools in the girls' race. Blacksburg's boys dominated and finished 34 points ahead of Christiansburg. The Blue Demons' Matt Nolan won the individual competition.

On the girls' side, Christiansburg won easily, defeating Brookville by 20 points. Kelly Repair of Rockbridge County was the individual winner.

nThe Virginia Tech men's and women's teams finished second and third, respectively, against a strong field at the Tech Invitational in Blacksburg.

Tennessee, ranked 17th nationally, won the men's competition by nine points. Tech's Mark Rumple finished first with a time of 26:33 and was followed by teammates Jason Dowdy (Cave Spring) and Mike Cox, who finished second and third, respectively.

The women's team finished 65 points behind overall team winner Clemson, with 93 points. Mandy Workman finished the 3.1-mile course in a time of 18:35.

SOCCER W&L men roll to road win

Sophomore reserve Brent Christ recorded two goals and an assist and Jamie Parker also had two goals as Washington and Lee's men defeated Goucher 6-2 in Towson, Md.

Parker netted both of his goals late in the first half and Christ tallied his two goals after intermission. W&L is 4-1; Goucher 5-3.

* VMI's men stayed close for one half against Furman before losing 4-0 in a Southern Conference game in Lexington. The Keydets (4-5, 0-2) were outshot 18-2 by the Paladins (6-2, 2-0).

* Roanoke's men dropped their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference game, 3-1 to Randolph-Macon at Alumni Field.

The Maroons (1-3-2, 0-1) struck first on a goal from Andy Newton (Cave Spring), with Brad Bandera getting the assist. The Yellow Jackets (6-0-1, 2-0) outshot Roanoke 13-9.

* Kevin Chenosky's goal in the 84th minute was the difference as Ferrum's men edged North Carolina Wesleyan 2-1 in Rocky Mount, N.C., in the Dixie Conference men's opener for both teams.

David Carey had the first goal for the Panthers (3-5). Scott Kennell scored for the Battlin' Bishops (1-6)

* Roanoke's women outshot Eastern Mennonite's club team 27-0 in a 5-0 rout at Alumni Field. Angela Amstutz had a goal and two assists, and Meredith Arnott added a goal and an assist.

* Senior midfielder Jill McFarlane scored three goals to lead Radford's women to a 9-1 victory over visiting Tennessee-Chattanooga. The Highlanders (1-6) outshot the Lady Moccasins 27-2, scoring their first goal two minutes into the game.

* Sophomore Karin Treese scored four goals and Caroline Keen added a goal and three assists as Washington and Lee (6-0, 4-0) defeated Guilford 7-0 in an ODAC women's game in Lexington.

The Generals outshot Guilford 29-5. The 6-0 start is the best in school history.

FIELD HOCKEY Roanoke bashes Washington and Lee

Roanoke crushed Washington and Lee's club team 11-0 in a nonconference game at Alumni Field. Christine Boyle led the way with five goals and two assists as Roanoke outshot the Generals 35-1.
