Gov. George Allen has approved a settlement with five male Virginia Commonwealth University professors who sued the school over pay raises to female faculty members.
The men alleged that a $440,000 lump-sum payment intended to erase salary inequities violated their rights.
The governor approved the settlement Friday while in France for a trade mission, Allen spokeswoman Julie Overy said. She said she could not provide details of the settlement.
The lawsuit hinged on the validity of a VCU study on which the payout was based. The male professors said the study was incomplete because it didn't include such measures as teaching load and research productivity.
One of the plaintiffs, Ted Smith, was pleased with the outcome.
``We're delighted that the settlement is final, and frankly, we feel completely vindicated now,'' said Smith, who said he could not discuss specifics.
