Several people were injured Monday afternoon when a traffic accident on South Main Street caused a car to run off the road and strike four members of the Blacksburg High School cross country team.
A van owned by New River Office Supply collided with a car driven by Kimberly S. Alley of Christiansburg about 4 p.m., police said. Alley's car was forced onto the sidewalk, where it struck the group of high school runners.
Alley and two of the runners were admitted to Columbia Montgomery Regional Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition. The other two runners and both of Alley's children were released after treatment.
Here's what happened, according to police: The van, driven by a 17-year-old Blacksburg resident, was stopped in the left-turn lane and then tried to change lanes. Alley's car, in the adjacent lane, was hit by the van and forced onto the sidewalk, where it hit the runners.
One of the runners was thrown into the windshield of Alley's car, injuring Alley, her 10-year-old son and her 7-year-old daughter.
The names of the runners and the driver of the van were not released because of their age.
Police had not charged anyone in the incident Monday night.
