BEASLEY, Martha Holmes (``Pete""), 68, of Roanoke, died Monda y, September 30, 1996. Mrs. Beasley attended Brenau College in Gainesville, Ga. and was a graduate of The University of North Carolina in Greensboro. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta National Sorority, a member of the Junior League of Roanoke Valley and was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas H. Beasley, Jr. and her sister, Mrs. Raymond Spohrer of Columbia, Md. Surviving are her sons and daughter-in-law, T. Howard Beasley, III, Nicholas (Nick) H. and Susan C. Beasley, all of Roanoke; her grandchildren, Elizabeth and Courtney Beasley; her stepgranddaughter, Katherine Bohon; her sister, Mrs. McDonald L. Stephens, Cobbs Creek, Va. A graveside service will be held in Evergreen Burial Park, Wednesday, October 2, 1996, at 11:30 a.m., with the Rev. Quigg Lawrence officiating. BOWLING, William Pershing, 78, of Thaxton, passed away Sunday, September 29, 1996, in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born July 30, 1918 in Bedford County, a son of the late James Robert Bowling and Fairy Saunders Bowling. He was a retired employee of the Rubatex Corporation, was a member of the Union Local #240, and was a member of the Union United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mary Callahan Bowling; five sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Brenda Bowling, Berkeley and Barbara Bowling, Aubrey Bowling, Alton and Pam Bowling, Gary and Paula Bowling, all of Thaxton; a daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Roger Elmore, Thaxton; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter (Sam) and Helen Bowling, Hardy, Buford Bowling, Madison Heights, Osmond Bowling, Bedford, James and Marie Bowling, Gretna; six sisters and brothers-in-law, Dester and Howard Poage, Virginia Anderson, Laura Sink, Joyce and Richard Cooper, all of Roanoke, Mary Katherine Spradlin, Vinton, Leena Boerner, Clifton Forge; nine grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren. He is survived by eleven children including Linda Brown, Indiana, Lucy and husband James Young, Ralph E., Jr. and wife, Mary, Illinois, Shawn Brown, Salem; four brothers, Warren Brown, Sr., Salem, Richard A. and wife Mary Lou Brown, Sr., Boones Mill, Wa yne and wife Stacy Brown, Salem, Herman R. and wife Donna Brown, Staunton; three sisters, Helen and husband John Harvey, Vinton, Doris and husband Jack Patton, Tennessee, Margrett Baker, Tennessee; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a very special friend, Terry Musselman, Salem. CALL, Mary Elizabeth (Gates), 65, of Rural Retreat died Sunday, September 29, 1996 in Rural Retreat, Va. Ms. Call was a member of the Rural Retreat Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Cecil R. Call, Sr. Survivors include two sons, Cecil R. Call, Jr., Shenandoah, Va., Roger D. Call, Manchester, TN; two daughters, Patricia C. Davidson, Crockett, Va., Angela B. Dunn, Saltville, Va.; two brothers, Willis Gates, Marion, Va., Robert Gates, Atkins, Va.; four sisters, Marie Hanshew, Rural Retreat, Va., Zelda Conklin, Barbara Holt, both of Owosso, MI, Gail Bell, Atkins, Va.; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Gates) Call will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 1996, at the Lighthouse Baptist Church, with the Rev. Benny Frye officiating. CARTER, Johnnie Simmons, 8 0, of Bassett, died Monday, September 30, 1996 in Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. A native of Henry County, he was the son of the late Will Madison Carter and Octavia Parker Carter. He was an employee of Bassett Furniture for 50 years. Mr. Carter was also a member of Stanleytown Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Lila Hall Carter of the home; two daughters, Octavia Turner of Axton and Linda Tolbert of Bassett; seven sons, James Carter of Atlanta, Ga., Gene Carter of Fort Wayne, Ind., Leonard Carter of Bassett, Larry Carter of Collinsville, Joe Carter of Atlanta, Ga., Terry Carter of Fieldale, and Roger Carter of Bassett; one brother, Willie Carter of Gretna; 22 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Carter was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 1996 at Stanleytown Baptist Church, Stanleytown. The Rev. CARTER, Rev. T. Eugene, 65, of Roanoke, died Sunday, September 29, 1996. Before his retirement in 1994, Rev. Carter was the District Superintendent of the Roanoke District of the United Methodist Church. He also served as the District Superintendent for Rappahanock in Lynchburg Districts. Rev. Carter served churches in Kilmarnick, Winchester, Richmond and Roanoke. A graduate of Randolph-Macon College and Emory University, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy W. Carter, and parents, Rev. and Mrs. O. B. Carter. Rev. Carter is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Thomas Scott and Stuart S. Carter, Richmond, Blair W. Carter, Roanoke; grandsons, Thomas Scott, Jr. and William S. Carter, Richmond; brother, O. Blair Carter, Richmond. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at South Roanoke United Methodist Church, with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Richmond at 4 p.m. Tuesday, October 1, 1996. CLEMMER, William Scott, (``Fly Wheel''), 36, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, September 29, 1996. He was the service manager for Liberty Cab Company. ``He rode for the brand''. DUNCAN, Norman Stacy Jr., 57, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, September 26, 1996, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born August 5, 1939 in Bedford County, a son of the late Norman Stacy Duncan Sr. and Robbie Wilson Rabin. He was an employee of Wills Paving Company. He is survived by a son, Jimmy Duncan, Bland; two sisters, Gertrude D. Saunders, Goodview; Helen D. Rogers, North Carolina; a good friend, Mary Reaves, Roanoke. FARRIS, Douglas Kolmer, (``D.K.""), 69 of Vinton went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 30, 1996 at Lewis Gayle Hospital, Salem. He was a member of the Vinton Baptist Church and was retired from The Roanoke Times & World News with 47 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wyndh am and Mary Farris; and two brothers, Cecil and Willard Farris. Surviving are his loving wife of 46 years, Ora Pendleton Farris; a daughter, Bonnie Sue Farris; granddaughter, Holly Caitlin Farris, Vinton; daughter and son-in-law, Robin and William Gillespie, Vinton; a number of nieces and nephews. HALE, George Henry, (``Precious""), 86, of Roanoke, passed away on Thursday, September 26, 1996, in a local hospital. He was born on January 10, 1910, the son of the late Felix and Esther Woods Hale. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Perdue Hale, and a son, George Henry Hale Jr. Surviving are his daughter, Lenora (Junius) Gaither; a son, Raleigh L. HICKS, Randall James, (``Jim""), 28, of Roanoke, died Sunday, September 29, 1996 at Lewis Gale Hospital. A native of Paoli, Pennsylvania. He graduated in 1990 from Grove City College and then went on to work as an Engineer with General Electric in Salem for the past 5 years. Jim was also working on his Masters Degree at Virginia Tech. Survivors include his wife, Stachelle ``Stacy"" Gilmore Hicks; a daughter, Haylee S. Hicks; parents, Ellis E. and Mary B. Hicks, of Bedford, Penn.; two brothers, N. JONES, Jessie Lee, 81, of Salem, died Monday, September 30, 1996. She was born in Lima, Ohio and went on to live in Salem for most of her life. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and the Thursday Morning Music Club. She had retired as a manager with the Hotel Roanoke gift shop. LACY, CARL B. 69 of Roanoke, died September 29, 1996 in a Salem Hospital. Mr. Lacy served in the U.S. Marine Corp. for 8 years during World War II and Korea. RATCLIFFE, Jessie Newby , 82, of Dublin, died Sunday, September 29, 1996, in a Dublin Nursing Home. Surviving are two daughters, Orpha Linkous and Ella Mae Cales both of Dublin; a son Charlie D. Ratcliffe of South Carolina; two sisters, Willie Hinkley of Richmond; and Ollie Goins of Bland. Nine grand children, ten great-grand children, and one great-great-grandchild also survived. ROBERTSON, Jo Ann H., 59, of Salem, passed away Sunday, September 29, 1996, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the co-founder of Robertson Marketing Group Inc. and a member of Westhampton Christian Church since 1972. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, W. H. and Bessie Hundley; sister, Christine Parsons. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Thomas M. Robertson Sr.; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Thomas M. Jr. and Meg Robertson, John H. and Debbie Robertson, David W. and Kathryn Robertson; grandsons, Michael, Alex, Matthew, Ian, and Phillip Robertson; father-in-law,H. T. STALLARD, Hobart Delmer, 101, of Radford, died peaceful ly at his daughters home Monday, September 20, 1996. He was born in Wise County on August 6, 1895. He was a longtime member of Jehovah Witnesses. He had made his home for the past 11 years with his loving daughter Regal Rader. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Lula Meade Stallard and five children. Survivors include eight children, Regal Rader of Radford; Ruby Harrison of Brooksville, Fla.; Nova Baker and Lila Vanover both of Pound, Va; Flagara Gabor, San Jose, Calif.; Oscar Stallard, Brandywine, Md.; Chester Stallard of Ironton, Oh and Darrow Stallard, Oceanside, Calif.; 37 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. TALLANT, James Clarence, (``J.C.''), 49, of Dublin, passed away Monday, September 30, 1996, at his home. He was a veteran of the U.S.Navy. He was a general superintendent for Fralin & Waldren. Survivors include his wife, Linda Cook Tallant; two sons, Timothy T. and James C. Sons and daughters-in-law, Lewis and Betty Tolbert, Columbus Ohio; Cecil and Margaret Tolbert of Albuquerque, N.M.; and Kenneth and Jackie Tolbert of Dublin; sister Nora Whitlock of Belspring, a brother, Elmer Montgomery of Dublin; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grand children. TOMLIN, Lillian McKinney, 84, of Thaxton, died Monday, September 30, 1996, following a lengthy illness. She was the wife of Rennie Rucker Tomlin Sr. for 65 years. Born in Phenix, she was a daughter of the late Lewis Meredith and Bertha Maxey McKinney. Mrs. Tomlin was retired from General Electric, and was a charter member of Brookhill Wesleyan Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Bertha Lawrence and her husband, Richard, of Thaxton, Barbara Glass and her husband, Lee, of Madison Heights, Frances Shoemaker of Lynchburg, and Naomi Lodge and her husband, Joe, of Montvale; two sons, Rennie Tomlin Jr. and his wife, Mary, of Forest, and Lloyd Tomlin and his wife, Sandi, of Franklinton, N.C.; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one son, William Meredith Tomlin; and by three sisters, Ruth Jacklin, Virginia McKinney, and Juanita Bacon Parsons. A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. from Brookhill Wesleyan Church at Goode by the Rev. Dr. Willy N. Heggoy and the Rev. Wesley Gillespie, with interment to follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the residence in Thaxton. Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of Brookhill Wesleyan Church, or the Bedford Rescue Squad.
