HOMESTEAD HOSTS SENIOR EVENT TODAY

The second visit of the Merrill Lynch Senior PGA Tour Shootout to The Homestead is today on the famed Cascades course.

Ten Senior Tour players - including nine of the top 11 money winners in 1996 - will play in the nine-hole shootout, in which one golfer is eliminated on each hole at the Hot Springs resort.

There is no admission charge for the public, although a $10 parking fee per vehicle, and accompanying shuttle service, is required. The Shootout begins at 11 a.m.

The $500,000 event is the championship of the Merrill Lynch Shootout series played throughout the year. Dave Stockton, who returns to the field, is the defending champion for the $130,000 first prize.

Other players in the field are top money winner Hale Irwin, Hot Springs' own J.C. Snead, Isao Aoki, Bob Murphy, Jim Colbert, John Bland, Walter Morgan, Jay Sigel and Dale Douglass, who leads the money list for the year-long weekly Shootout series.

The Shootout will be taped by ESPN for a two-hour show on Christmas Day, at 4 p.m.
