WYTHE'S WORK PAYS OFF IN OVERTIME

Megan Johnson fed Lisa Garland for a basket underneath with five seconds left in overtime, lifting George Wythe over Northwood 62-60 in a Hogoheegee District game Tuesday night in Wytheville.

The Maroons (6-5) outscored Northwood 21-6 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Tabitha Cook led Wythe with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

Galax 61, Rocky Gap 46: Erin Kyle scored a game-high 28 points as the Maroon Tide (6-3, 4-0) dumped the Eagles (1-5, 0-3) in a Mountain Empire District game in Galax.

Covington 47, James River 36: Melissa Paige scored 16 points to lead the Cougars (4-4) past the Knights (2-8) in Buchanan, where both teams were opening their Pioneer District schedule.

Pocahontas 52, Bland 28: Krista Jennings had 13 points and eight rebounds as the Indians downed the winless Rockets in a Mountain Empire District game in Pocahontas.

Radford 43, Auburn 38: In Riner, senior Charlee Taylor scored 17 of her 27 points in the second half to lead the Bobcats (8-4) past the Eagles (5-7) in the Three Rivers District opener for both teams.

Laurel Park 45, Magna Vista 38: Tiffany Lynch scored 17 points and Brandi Martin added 13 as the Lancers defeated the Warriors in a Piedmont District game in Ridgeway.

Laurel Park (7-4, 1-0) held a one-point lead going into the final period and pulled away. Sandi Reid led Magna Vista (5-5, 0-1) with 16 points.

Martinsville 49, Bassett 41: Tekeshia Mitchell scored 13 points as the Bulldogs pulled away from the Bengals in the final quarter to win in Martinsville.

Tiffany Watkins added 12 points and Erika Brandon 11, six of them in the final quarter, as the Bulldogs (7-3) won their Piedmont District opener.

Heather Miller paced the Bengals (10-2, 0-1) with 13 points.

Graham 62, Carroll County 53: Pamela Oakes scored 13 of her game-high 31 points in a third-quarter run that lifted the G-Girls to a Southwest District victory in Hillsville.

Graham (2-7, 1-2) outscored the Cavaliers 19-9 in the third. Carroll County (3-9, 0-2) had a 20-11 run in the fourth, but couldn't get within striking distance.

The Cavaliers were led by Chelsie Stoneman's 16 points and Angie Farmer's 10.

Parry McCluer 66, Bath County 32: Lindsay Coleman hit seven of 10 3-point attempts and scored 35 points to help the Fighting Blues (6-5) cruise to a victory over the Chargers (4-6) in their opening Pioneer District contest in Hot Springs.

Katie Hardbarger led the Chargers with 14 points.

Fort Chiswell 54, Grayson County 33: Amber Gunter's 19 points carried the Pioneers past the Blue Devils in a Mountain Empire District matchup in Independence.

Lindsey Coleman led Grayson County (3-8, 2-2) with 10 points.

Craig County 48, Highland 38: Jody Harden scored 12 points as the Rockets opened Pioneer District play with their first victory of the season, a 10-point decision over the Rams in Monterey.

Craig County (1-9) pulled away in the second half, outscoring Highland 31-21. Tammy Shifflett led Highland (3-3, 0-1) with 16 points.

Alleghany 69, Blacksburg 58: Natasha Chapman scored 35 points and had 10 steals as the Mountaineers kept the Indians winless in the Blue Ridge District.

Chapman scored nine points in the first quarter, when Alleghany (8-3, 3-2) took a 21-6 lead. She made nine of 10 free throws in the fourth when Blacksburg (3-9, 0-5) came back.

Christiansburg 41, Rockbridge County 39: Lisa Dalton scored 14 points and Amber Reed had 11 as the Blue Demons (7-4, 2-3) held on to to beat the Wildcats in a Blue Ridge District game in Christiansburg.

Kate Ides was the only Rockbridge County scorer in double figures, with 14 points.

Staunton River 57, Rustburg 46: Three players scored in double figures as the Golden Eagles outlasted the Devils in a Seminole District game in Moneta.

Erin Wolfe scored a game-high 18 points, Crystal English added 17 and Penny Forest chipped in 11 for Staunton River (6-5, 4-0). Wolfe added eight assists and nine rebounds.

Chilhowie 57, Rural Retreat 49: Kristie Poe (22) and Amanda Mountain (18) combined for 40 points as the Warriors downed the Indians in a Hogoheegee District game in Rural Retreat.

Kristie Osborne had 17 points and Mary Brewer 10 for Rural Retreat (5-5, 2-3). Chilhowie is 6-5, 3-1.

Shawsville 66, Giles 41: First-quarter turnovers hurt the Spartans and they never could recover against the Shawnees in a Three Rivers District opener in Pearisburg.

Giles trailed 7-5 in the first quarter before it turned over the ball twice. Shawsville converted them for layups. The same thing happened after a quick timeout, and the Shawnees (9-2) were off.

Kristen White led Giles (4-6) with 16 points.

Brookville 57, Liberty 48: Courtney Jones led the way with 18 points as the Bees picked up a Seminole District victory over the Minettes in Lynchburg.

Liberty (3-11) was led by Catherine Saunders' 17 points.

Monday's game

Wilson Memorial 60, Parry McCluer 40: The Fighting Blues' Lindsey Coleman hit six 3-point shots and scored a game-high 23 points, but that wasn't enough to prevent a non-district loss in Fishersville.
