HICKS' COMEBACK SPARKS BOTETOURT

Sarah Hicks scored a game-high 31 points, including 14 in the final quarter, as Lord Botetourt upended Blue Ridge District rival Salem 63-48 on Tuesday night in Daleville.

Hicks, who returned after a two-week absence with an ankle sprain, also pulled down seven rebounds and added five assists.

Sara Moore scored 14 points for Lord Botetourt (11-1 overall, 4-1 district). Moore also had six rebounds and five assists.

Sara Palmer scored 13 points for Salem (7-4, 2-3) and Mandy Williams added 12.

Spartans coach Dee Wright missed Tuesday night's game and will not be with the team for the next couple of weeks after undergoing surgery this past weekend at Lewis Gale Hospital.

Jill Green, Wright's assistant, is serving as interim coach until Wright returns. Wright is in her 11th year as the Spartans' coach, and her teams have won 184 games during that span.

In other games:

Craig County 48, Highland 38: Jody Harden scored 12 points as the Rockets opened Pioneer District play with their first victory of the season, a 10-point decision over the Rams in Monterey.

Craig County (1-9) pulled away in the second half, outscoring Highland 31-21. Tammy Shifflett led Highland (3-3, 0-1) with 16 points.

Covington 47, James River 36: Melissa Paige scored 16 points to lead the Cougars past the Knights in Buchanan, where both teams were opening their Pioneer District schedule.

James River (2-8) held a four-point halftime lead, but was outscored 27-12 in the second half. Nakia Burrell led the Knights with 10 points.

Covington (4-4) ran away with the game in the fourth quarter outscoring the Knights by 11.

Alleghany 69, Blacksburg 58: Natasha Chapman scored 35 points and had 10 steals as the Mountaineers kept the Indians winless in the Blue Ridge District.

Chapman scored nine points in the first quarter, when Alleghany (8-3, 3-2) took a 21-6 lead. She made nine of 10 free throws in the fourth when Blacksburg (3-9, 0-5) came back.

Katie Craft scored 15 and made a pair of 3-pointers for the Mountaineers.

Karly Geller and Andrea Feret scored 17 each for Blacksburg.

Christiansburg 41, Rockbridge County 39: Lisa Dalton scored 14 points and Amber Reed had 11 as the Blue Demons (7-4, 2-3) held on to to beat the Wildcats in a Blue Ridge District game in Christiansburg.

Kate Ides was the only Rockbridge County scorer in double figures, with 14 points.
