BROCE, Hazel Leotta Frye, 80, wife of Grayson H. Broce Sr., of Route 1, Box 50-G, Fort Defiance, died at 5:40 a.m. Tuesday, October 1, 1996, in Augusta Medical Center at Fishersville. She was born on August 13, 1916, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Marion Edward and Loda Sheesley Frye. Mrs. Broce was a member of Verona United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Open Door Sunday School Class and the Choir. In addition to her husband, to whom she was married on November 15, 1941, survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Grayson H. Jr. and Irene F. Broce of Covington, and Ronald Eugene and Wanda Jean Broce of Verona; three brothers, Edward Eugene Frye of Covington, Carl Sheesley Frye of Falling Springs and Hershel Delbert Frye of Hot Springs; four grandsons, Douglas C. Broce, Kevin Scott Broce, Christopher Eugene Broce and Nicholas Robert Broce, and a stepgreat-grandson, Travis Harlow. She was preceded in death by a brother, M. K. Frye. A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Verona United Methodist Church by the Rev. David M. Burch. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Charles Hizey, Ted Taylor, Bill Wonderley, Glen Sutton, Jack Wine, Benny Garber, John Gray and Custis Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Open Door Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Henry Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

BROWN, Ralph Eugene, Sr., 71, of Salem, died Sunday, September 29, 1996. Funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday, Lotz Salem Chapel.

BURRELL, Grady Lloyd, 79, of Roanoke, died Monday, September 30, 1996. Mr. Burrell was an active member, deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member of Villa Heights Baptist Church, was a member and past president of Villa Heights Lions Club, and was a member of Melrose Masonic Lodge #139. He was a retired locomotive engineer from Norfolk and Western Railway with 37 years of service. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Evelyn Martin Burrell; his son and daughter-in-law, William (``Bill"") and Faye Burrell of Roanoke County; his daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Wayne Massey, and Carolyn and Charlie Price, all of Roanoke County; his grandchildren, Mark Burrell, Michael Massey and wife Elaine, Steven Massey, Angela Wingo and husband Scott, Melissa Jones and husband Jeff, Jeff Price and wife Sheri, and Jill Davis and husband Todd; his great-grandchildren, Allen-Michael Massey, Ashley Jones, Emily Wingo and Jordan Davis; a brother, Hugh Burrell of Winston-Salem, N.C., and four sisters, Adeline Davis of Canton, Ga., Virginia Lanning of Brevard, N.C., Josephine Speed of Raven Gap, Ga., and Mildred Bennett of Atlanta, Ga. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel on Thursday, October 3, at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Harold C. Lewis officiating. CALDWELL, Lawrence Clayton, Sr., 78, of New Castle, passed away Monday, September 30, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was a life-long resident of Craig County. He owned and operated Lawrence's Bestway Grocery Store in New Castle for 35 years and at one time served as Treasurer of Craig County. Mr. Caldwell served on the Board of Directors for the Farmers & Merchants Bank, and was a member of the Masonic Mountain Lodge #140 A.F. & A.M., and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4491. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Craig County Fair Association. Mr. Caldwell also served on the Board of Directors for New Castle Building Corporation. During World War II he served with the 76th Infantry Division in Germany during the Battle of the Bulge, being awarded the Bronze Star for heroism. He was a member and served as a deacon of the New Castle Christian Church. He is survived by his loving wife, Lila Lipes Caldwell of New Castle; a son, L. Clayton Caldwell Jr. and his wife, Glenna, of Roanoke; two granddaughters, Lisa C. Beaudoin and husband, Michael, Tracey C. Dillon and husband, Sam, all of New Castle; one stepgreat-grandson, Michael C. Beaudoin; one sister, Pauline Leffel of Roanoke; one sister-in-law, Emogene Stafford of Rich Creek; one nephew, John B. Leffel, Jr. and his wife, Betty, of Roanoke. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, October 3, 1996, at the New Castle Christian Church with Dr. Ernie Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Huffman Memorial Park. Military rites will be held at the graveside. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Paitsel Funeral Home, New Castle. CALL, Mary Elizabeth Gates, 65, of Rural Retreat died Sunday, September 29, 1996. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 1996, at Lighthouse Baptist Church, with the Rev. CROMER, Ronnie L., 52, of Blacksburg, died Monday, September 30, 1996. He was born June 24, 1944, in Christiansburg, Va. Surviving are his parents, John and Treva Cromer, Christiansburg; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Chris and Cheryl Cr omer, Myrtle Beach, S.C., and John Cromer and his girlfriend, Linsey Phillips, Blacksburg; one brother and sister-in-law, Dusty and Wanda Cromer, Christiansburg; two nephews and their wives, Tim and Ginger Cromer, Middleburg, Fla., and Tony and Missy Cromer, Christiansburg, and a number of aunts and uncles. GRAVATT, Anne Margaret, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, October 1, 1996. She was a graduate of Radford High School and Radford College. She was employed by Bluefield Hardware Company in Bluefield, W. Va. where she lived for many years and in 1958 transferred to Roanoke as a Buyer and Secretary for the Company and later worked as a Hostess at Lotz Funeral Home. She was a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church and a member of the Dudley-Harne Circle. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Dorothy Kingston of Jacksonville, Fla.; and cousins. PHLEGAR, Beatrice Lindsay, of Allisonia and formerly of Radford, died Monday evening, September 30, 1996, in Radford Community Hospital. Born in Carroll County, she was the daughter of the late Martin Luther Lindsey and Arminta Rudy Lindsey. She was retired from St. Albans Hospital. Mrs. Phlegar was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Phlegar; two sisters, Hetty L. Fariss and Ethel L. Lyons, and a brother, Ceibert Lindsey. While in Radford, she attended Carter Street United Methodist Church. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Bruce and Cheryl Fariss, Don and Loretta Fariss, and Bill and Ivery Lindsey, all of Allisonia, Rachael and Bob DeHaven of Pulaski, Patricia Austin, Bill and Gayle Clark, and Hope Harman, all of Winston-Salem, N.C., Michael and Carole Fariss of Fredericksburg, and Eddie and Virginia Frost of Hendersonville, N.C.; a special friend, Alice Smith of Allisonia; 28 great-nieces and great-nephews, and 29 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. PINER, Ela Yost, 88, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, October 1, 1996, in a Salem hospital. She was the widow of Cecil A. Piner. She was a member of Belmont United Methodist Church. SABATINOS, Lawrence O., 68, of Blacksburg, f ormerly of Dayton, Ohio, passed away Sunday, September 29, 1996 in Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Sabatinos was a retired engineer from Hercules, Inc. and was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he earned a B.S. Degree in Biological Sciences and Mathematics. and a M.S. Degree in Plant Pathology and Physiology. He was a member of the Patron's Advising Council for the Blind, Phi Sigma Honor Society, the National Railway Historical Society and his interests included reading, model railroading, specialty steam trains and genealogy. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Frick); four children, Lawrence E. Sabatinos of Campbellville, Ontario, Walter Sabatinos of Yamhill, Oregon, Jacqueline Harmon of Tolono, Ill. and Martin Sabatinos of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Sarah Anne Sabatinos, Christopher Jon Sabatinos and David James Sabatinos. SANDERS, James L., Sr. 71, of Salem, died Monday, September 30, 1996. He was retired from McClung Lumber Company. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Thelma J. Sanders; son, James L. Sanders Jr.; daughters and son-in-law, Ellen and Mike Reno, and Diane Sanders Hodges; mother, Carrie B. SANDERSON, Armand L., 81, of Vinton, died Tuesday, October 1, 1996, in a local hospital. He was a member of Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church and a former Vice Mayor and Councilman for the Town of Vinton. He was a retired Vice President of the Shenandoah Life Insurance Company. STALLARD, Hobart Delmer, 101, of Radford, d ied peacefully at his daughter's home Monday, September 30, 1996. He was born in Wise County on August 6, 1895. He was a longtime member of Jehovah's Witnesses. He had made his home for the past 11 years with his loving daughter, Regal Rader. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Lula Meade Stallard, and five children. Survivors include eight children, Regal Rader of Radford, Ruby Harrison of Brooksville, Fla., Nova Baker and Lila Vanover of Pound, Flagara Gabor of San Jose, Calif., Oscar Stallard of Brandywine, Md., Chester Stallard of Ironton, Ohio, and Darrow Stallard, Oceanside, Calif.; 37 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Special thanks to a very special and devoted grandson, Rice H. Rader. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 2, 1996, at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home. Mr. Owen McKinney will officiate. TODD, Edith Maye, 87, of Rt. 5, Galax, passed away Tuesday, October 1 , 1996 at her residence. She was born February 28, 1909 in Baywood, Va. to Isaiah and Lollie Higgins Todd. She was a member of Cliffview Church of God. Surviving are her sister and brother-in-law, Nell and Ross Wilson, Galax; brother, Kyle B. Todd, Galax; special dedicated and loving care-givers, Marsha Catron McCraw and Joe McCraw, Galax; special nephew, Jeff Wilson, Hillsville; and several other nephews and nieces also survive. TUCK, Everett Dennis, (``Muley""), 78, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, October 1, 1996. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was retired from the V.A. Medical Center. Mr. Tuck was a member of the D.A.V. and the American Legion. Surviving are his wife, Edna Graham Tuck; son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Linda Tuck; a daughter, Dennie Goetzke, all of Roanoke; grandchildren, Jeffrey and Tondra Manuel, Roanoke, Rodney and Leslie Wohlford, Pennsylvania; great-grandchild, Blaine Manuel; sisters, Virginia Tuck Pedigo, Ethel Tuck Hudson, both of Roanoke. WALKER, Newell Kermit, 71, of Farmville, Va., formerly of Callaway, passed away Monday, September 30, 1996. Born September 15, 1925, he was a son of the late P.C. and Laura Montgomery Walker. He was a life long member of New Hope Methodist Church, Callaway. Surviving are one brother, Samuel Winton Walker, of Drakes Branch, Va.; several nieces and nephews. WILLIAMS, Billy Lee, Sr., 63, of 3001 Bittersweet Road, Winston-Salem, N.C., died Tuesday, October 1, 1996, in Forsyth Memorial Hospital. Mr. Williams was born January 10, 1933, in Vinton, Va., to Charlie Lee and Willie Weeks Williams. He moved to Winston-Salem in 1969, and retired from American Bakeries in 1972 with 22 years of service. He also worked for Gunnoe Sausage for five years and Budd Services as a security guard for 14 years. Mr. Williams was a member of Parkway Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Rachael Drewery Williams of the home; two sons, Billy L. Williams Jr. and his wife, Betty, of Winston-Salem, and Dan M. Williams and his wife, Marietta, of Vienna, Va.; four grandchildren, Charles Lee Williams, Lisa Marie Williams, Christine Williams and Lindsey Williams; one sister, Mrs. Gerri Lovelace of Salem, Va., and two brothers, Jack M. WOODWARD, Robert Brown, Sr., 79, of Moneta, died Monday, September 30, 1996, at his residence. He was born in Milton, Mass. on March 4, 1917, a son of the late James Edwin Woodward and Edith Brown Woodward. He graduated from Greenfield High School in Greenfield, Mass, and later attended Northeastern University. A skilled and versatile athlete, Mr. Woodward participated in a number of high school, college, municipal, and industrial league sports including baseball, hockey, basketball, and tennis. He was also an avid fisherman, who continued to pursue that hobby after his retirement to Smith Mountain Lake. While in New Hampshire, Mr. Woodward was a leader and athletic coach in a variety of youth organizations including the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Little League, Babe Ruth League, and various church activities. He was also recently awarded a medal by the Grand Masonic Lodge of Massachusetts in recognition of his 50 year membership in that organization. Mr. Woodward retired to Moneta in 1981, after a pioneering career in the plastics and electronics engineering industry. He was employed in design and management positions by the Plax Corporation of Hartford, Conn., the Raytheon Corporation of Bedford, Mass., and Sanders Associates of Nashua, N.H. He was a U.S.. Navy veteran of World War II, and was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Pratt Woodward; five children, Dorothy Woodward Carter, Janesville, Calif., Robert Woodward Jr., Reston, James Woodward, Spring Valley, Calif., William Woodward, Washington, D.C., and Daniel Woodward, Fairfax; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 3, 1996, at 2 p.m. at Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Riley Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery. Box 458, Moneta, Va. 24121. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford.
