"HERBAL BREADS," "HERBAL SOUPS," "HERBAL SALADS" AND "HERBAL SWEETS": FRESH FROM THE GARDEN COOKBOOK Series, By Ruth Bass (Storey Publishing, $9.95 each)

Given the enormous popularity of herbs in both gardening and cooking, Ruth Bass should have winners in her four new little books. While the books are small - each is only 6 1/2 inches square - they come packed with tasty herbal treats such as Herbed Focaccia (in the book on breads), Gazpacho (soups), Rosemary Fruit Punch (sweets), and Garlic Mayonnaise (salads). I prepared the Lemon Summer Salad for friends on a hot evening, and we all enjoyed the lemony and refreshing coolness. Many of the other detailed and easy-to-follow recipes are tempting.

Also, Mary Rich's illustrations add charm to the book. These little books would make delightful gifts, but keeping them is such a temptation.
