CBS PICKS TECH-MIAMI

CBS Sports will televise Virginia Tech's Big East Football Conference game Nov.16 at Miami.

The 3:38 p.m. kickoff on WDBJ (Channel 7) will be the Hokies' second split-national telecast of the season on CBS, following this past Saturday's 52-21 loss at Syracuse. CBS also will show the Virginia Tech-Virginia game Nov.29 from Lane Stadium in Blacksburg.

In other college sports news in the region:

Andy Newton and Keith Cozzens scored first-half goals to spark Roanoke College to a 3-0 victory at Bridgewater in Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer.

P.J. McCarthy scored the third goal for the Maroons and assisted on Cozzens' goal for the Maroons (3-3-2 overall, 1-1-0 conference). The victory was the 99th of coach Scott Allison's career at Roanoke. Bridgewater is 1-8, 1-3.

Lisa Franzino scored three goals for the second time in as many days as Roanoke College rolled past Randolph-Macon Woman's College 5-1 in an ODAC women's soccer game in Salem.

Franzino has 13 goals and five assists in 11 games for the Maroons (8-3, 5-1). Randolph-Macon Woman's is 6-4, 2-3.

Washington and Lee got three goals from Karin Treese and a goal and two assists from Michelle Bauman in a 9-0 rout of host Sweet Briar in ODAC women's soccer.

Beth Mozena and Stephanie McKnight split the shutout for the Generals (7-0, 5-0). Sweet Briar is 3-6-1, 0-6-1.

Alyson Patrick scored two goals to pace visiting North Carolina Wesleyan to a 5-0 victory over Ferrum in a Dixie Conference women's soccer game. North Carolina Wesleyan is 8-1-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Panthers are 4-2-1 and 0-1-0.

Mike Fisher and Matt Leonard each had a goal and an assist as Virginia defeated Liberty 2-1 in a men's soccer game in Charlottesville.

After a scoreless first half, Fisher scored in the 67th minute and Leonard made it 2-0 in the 79th minute for the Cavaliers (7-0-3). Ryan Trumbo scored with 23 seconds left for the Flames (5-3-0).

Mark Ludwig and Cory Turner scored goals to lead Virginia Tech to a 2-0 victory over VMI in a men's soccer game in Roanoke.

John Sexton made four saves to earn the shutout for the Hokies (4-5). VMI is 4-6.

Staunton River loses top RB to injury

Staunton River, the top-ranked football team in Timesland, will go into a key Seminole District game Friday at Jefferson Forest without running back Jarrett Ferguson.

Ferguson, averaging 189 yards rushing per game to rank second in Timesland, is sidelined with a badly sprained right ankle. He is expected to return Oct.11 at archrival Liberty.

The Golden Eagles' other injured starters - running back Kevin Martin and linebacker Jeremy Wright - should be able to play against Jefferson Forest. Martin has an injured finger and Wright has a jammed neck.

Willie Johnson, a junior, will take Ferguson's place in the backfield. Martin is Timesland's 11th leading rusher, averaging 120 yards per game.

The highest-rated professional polo match scheduled in Virginia will be played Saturday at Green Hill Park in western Roanoke County, when the annual Roanoke Symphony Polo Cup is held at 2 p.m.

Team Michelob will be the host team for the third consecutive year, meeting Grand Interiors.

Gates open for the symphony fund-raiser at 10 a.m., and general admission is $10, including parking. Other admission options are available for groups, ranging in price up to $1,430 for 24 persons.

Roanoke's K.J. Hippensteel downed Sebastien Romeu of Chile 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the round of 16 in the International Tennis Federation-sponsored tournament in Santiago. Hippensteel, competing in the boys' 18 division, faces Uruguay's Mario Cabrera today.
