CARTER, Lennie Kirby, 74, of Lexington, died Wednesday, October 2, 1996, at her residence. Born December 14, 1921 in Rockbridge County, she was the daughter of the late Gilmore Robert Kirby and Millie Ayers Kirby. Mrs. Carter was a member of the Kerrs Creek Baptist Church, and a charter member of the Kerrs Creek Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Estile Carter; and a son, Howard Thurman ``Sonny'' Carter. Surviving are three sons, Robert Glenn Carter, Lexington, Donald Lee ``Don'' Carter, Lexington, James William ``Jimmy'' Carter, Salem; one sister, Elizabeth Parker, Sandston; one brother, Gilmore Kirby, Newport News; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, October 5, 1996, at 2 p.m. from the Kerrs Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Will Hamric and Rev. Dean Staton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Lexington or Kerrs Creek Fire Department, or the Lexington Lifesaving and First Aid Crew. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington.

CROMER, Ronnie L., 52, of Blacksburg, died Monday, September 30, 1996. A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 3, 1996, at 11 a.m. at the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Rob Sowell officiating. GRAVATT, Anne Margaret, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, October 1, 1996. She was a graduate of Radford High School and Radford College. She was employed by Bluefield Hardware Company in Bluefield, W. Va. where she lived for many years and in 1958 transferred to Roanoke as a Buyer and Secretary for the Company and later worked as a Hostess at Lotz Funeral Home. She was a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church and a member of the Dudley-Harne Circle. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Dorothy Kingston of Jacksonville, Fla.; and cousins. Funeral services will be held at the graveside in Central Cemetery, Radford at 3 p.m. Thursday, October 3, 1996 with the Rev. William B. Ramey Jr. officiating. NEWMAN, Catherine Century Spangler, 68, of Boones Mill, passed away at her home Tuesday, October 1, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilford Newman; and a son, Wilford Daniel (Danny) Ne wman. Surviving are 4 daughters, Ms. Sandra N. Jenkins, Wirtz, Mrs. Gary Rosemary Barger, Pittsville, Miss Brenda Darlene Newman, of the home, Miss Lorrie Ann Newman, Rocky Mount; one son, Ricky Lee Newman, Charlotte, N.C.; one parental grandchild, Courtney Danyel Newman; nine grandchildren, Frankie Barger, Regina McPherson, Mary C. OSBORNE, Frances Poole, 69, of Rt. 3, Independence, passed away Tuesday, October 1, 1996 at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax, Va. Born November 17, 1926 at Independence, Va., to D. Price Poole and Mayme Todd. She was a member of Bridle Creek United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. Surviving include her husband, Dan C. Osborne of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and John Delp, Comers Rock, Dana and Garry Jessup, Hillsville; two sisters, Anne Spates, Rockville, Md., Aileen Wright, Independence; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Hazel Poole, Ralph and Ruth Poole all of Galax; six grandchildren, Paula Delp, Steven Delp, Kristi Mays, Barry Jessup, Tabitha Jessup and Denean Jessup; four great-grandchildren, Justin Mays, Casey Mays, Gage Freeman and Reagan Delp; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, October 4, 1996 in the Bridle Creek United Methodist Church with interment in Bridle Creek Cemetery. The Rev. James Fain will officiate. THURMOND, William Kyle, Jr., 65, of Newbern, N.C., formerly of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, October 1, 1996. He was retired from the Robert Bosch Corporation as a Systems Project Leader. He was associated with Corning Glass Company for 18 years, after receiving a B. S. Degree in Business from Oklahoma State University. He received an M.B.A. Degree from Shenandoah University prior to moving to Charleston, S.C. He is survived by his wife, Martha R. Thurmond; three sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas L. and Vickie Gearheart, Timothy W. and Sherry Gearheart, all of Roanoke, Christopher D. and Janice Gearheart, Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter, Monica K. Thurmond of New York; and three grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at Salem Presbyterian Church Friday, October 4, 1996 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Dean Lindsey and the Rev. Anthony Layman officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society

TURNER, Ann Porterfield, 62, of 1537 Oakwood Street, Bedford, passed away Wednesday, October 2, 1996, at a local nursing home. She was born July 28, 1934 in Giles County, a daughter of the late James Burke Porterfield and Ruth Dowdy Porterfield of Waynesboro, who survives. She was a school teacher and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pembroke. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Douglas Lee Turner; two sons, SFC John Douglas Turner, Fort Jackson (Columbia), S.C., Kevin Hamilton Turner, Bedford; a sister, Joan Ingram, Waynesboro; a granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Turner. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, October 4, 1996 at 2 p.m. from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford, by Elder Lane Carter. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford, and request that those wishing to make memorials consider the American Cancer Society.

WILHELM, Margaret Anne Jennings Kinsley, 65 of Vinton died Tuesday, October 1, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley R. Wilhelm. ZERBEE, Francis V., 86, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, October 1, 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie H. Zerbee. He was retired from the N & W Railway with 39 years service and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the European and Pacific Theatres. Surviving are five sisters and brothers-in-law, Martina Zerbee, Anna Louise and Jerome B. Tankersley, Edith Zerbee Cox, Lavinia Ze rbee, all of Roanoke, Jane Zerbee and James H. Gary, Golden, Col.; also a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 1:30 p.m. Friday, October 4, 1996. Interment will be in the St. Andrews Diocesan Cemetery.
