Optical Cable Corp. of Roanoke said it had set a monthly sales record in September with orders valued at $5.03 million. The company said it received orders for nine large projects, defined as those over $100,000, compared with the previous high of six projects.

The North American Horse and Mule Loggers Association will hold its national meeting Saturday at Ferrum College in Franklin County. Logging demonstrations will be given from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The association's mission is to promote equine logging as an environmentally sensitive alternative, said Jason Rutledge, regional director. "This is probably the most functionally oriented group of draft horse people outside the Amish in the country," he said. Sunday, the group will move to the Copper Hill Lodge in Floyd County for round-table discussions and a "hook yourself" horse pull. For more information, call 540-651-6355.

McDonough Bolyard Peck, a construction management and engineering firm with offices in Roanoke and Fairfax, has been awarded a three-year contract by the Commonwealth Transportation Board to provide inspection services in the Virginia Department of Transportation's Salem District. The contract, worth a maximum of $2.5 million, calls for 15 inspectors to help the department on bridge and road construction projects.
