BLACKSBURG SEEKS VOLUNTEERS TO MARK 200 YEARS

Blacksburg is looking for volunteers to help plan its bicentennial celebration.

Events are being planned to take place throughout 1998, the town's bicentennial year.

Scheduled are a Bicentennial Parade on July 4, a spring downtown art show, an outdoor play, a presentation of "Our Town," walking tours of Blacksburg's original 16 squares and a video.

The town's original 16 squares - traceable to a 1798 Virginia General Assembly Act and a deed - are those bordered by Jackson, Clay and Wharton streets and Draper Road.

The town's bicentennial logo incorporates the town's old 16-square grid.

"We want to make this a true community celebration," said Bonnie Svrcek, assistant town manager. "So we want to have as much citizen input as possible."

A 14-member steering committee is meeting monthly to plan events. Included in the group are: Mayor Roger Hedgepeth, Lewis Barnett, Hugh Campbell, Clara Cox, Kaye Cross, Beth Ifju, R. Baldwin Lloyd, Joan Munford, Mike Ogliaruso, Frances Parsons, James Robertson, Edie Schumacher, Ray Van Dyke and Svrcek.

Those interested in joining this group or volunteering in some way are asked to contact Svrcek at 961-1130.
