BROWN IN RUNNING FOR LOMBARDI

Virginia Tech senior defensive end Cornell Brown is one of 12 semifinalists for the 1996 Rotary Lombardi Award, presented annually to college football's lineman of the year.

Brown, a 6-foot-2, 248-pound native of Lynchburg, was a consensus All-American in 1995 while helping lead the Hokies to a school-best 10-2 season and Sugar Bowl title.

The semifinalists include Ohio State's Orlando Pace, the junior offensive tackle who won the award in 1995.

The rest of the group is center K.C. Jones (Miami); end Brandon Mitchell (Texas A&M); guard Chris Naole (Colorado); guard Dan Neil (Texas); center Rod Payne (Michigan); tackle Juan Roque (Arizona State); tackle Darrell Russell (Southern Cal); linebacker Matt Russell (Colorado); center Aaron Taylor (Nebraska); and defensive end Jared Tomich (Nebraska).

The selection committee, comprised of more than 300 members, including former winners, coaches and media, will narrow the field to four finalists Oct.31.

The 27th Lombardi will be presented by the sponsoring Rotary Club of Houston on Dec.5.
