         Rural Retreat's leading scorer was incorrectly identified in a girls'
      basketball roundup in Friday's Sports section. Krystal Dale led the 
      Indians with 16 points as they defeated Holston 79-71.


ALLEN, TERRIERS ARE RUDE GUESTS

Brandy Allen scored a game-high 14 points Thursday night to lead William Byrd to a 45-33 girls' basketball victory over Blacksburg on the Indians' home court.

Allen scored eight of her 14 points in the first quarter to keep the Terriers (10-2 overall, 5-1 Blue Ridge District) close at 15-16.

William Byrd pulled ahead in the second quarter and built upon its 30-25 halftime lead in a tough defensive game.

The Indians (3-10, 0-6) went cold after obtaining their slim advantage through the first quarter. They hit only 12 of their 44 shots from the field for the game.

Salem 47, Rockbridge County 32: At Salem, Sarah Palmer's 16 points helped send the Spartans to a sloppy Blue Ridge District victory over the Wildcats.

Salem (8-4) jumped to a 15-3 first-quarter lead and held on despite a rash of mistakes.

Elizabeth Faulkner had 12 points and Carmen Hambrick 10 for Rockbridge.

Glenvar 61, Auburn 42: The Highlanders had a balanced scoring attack led by Erika Hale's 15 points and 11 rebounds in their Three Rivers District win over the Eagles.

Amy Layman and Amanda Rydell added 11 points apiece and Amanda Kennedy and Bonnie Willett 10 each for Glenvar (8-4, 1-1).

Laura Underwood led Auburn (5-8, 0-2) with 12 points.

Bath County 54, Craig County 22: At New Castle, Katie Hardbarger scored 16 points and the Chargers bolted to a huge early lead and whipped the Rockets in a Pioneer District game.

Suzanna Shanks added 12 points for Bath (5-6, 1-1), which led 27-9 at halftime and cruised. Sommer Horn paced Craig (1-11, 1-1) with nine points.

Parry McCluer 59, James River 47: The Fighting Blues doubled up the Knights in the first quarter and cruised the remainder of the way for a Pioneer District victory.

Point guard Lindsey Coleman, coming off a 35-point performance Tuesday against Bath County, led the way with 17 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and five steals for Parry McCluer (7-5, 2-0). Clarissa Johnson added 11 and Nikki Barger 10 in the victory.

Nakia Burell led James River (2-9, 0-2) with 20 points.

Floyd County 81, Giles 36: Sonya Hylton scored 17 points to lead four players in double figures as the Buffaloes routed the Spartans in a Three Rivers District contest in Floyd.

Sara Connor added 12 points and Jill Quesenberry and Karen Pursifull had 11 points apiece for Floyd County (12-1, 2-0). Pursifull also had six steals.

Kristen White led Giles (4-7, 0-2) with 16 points.

Martinsville 62, Patrick County 55: Tekeshia Mitchell took over the game in third quarter, leading a rally that helped the Bulldogs erase a 14-point first-half deficit and win a Piedmont District game at home.

Martinsville (8-3, 2-0) trailed by 10 in the third quarter before turning up the fullcourt pressure and embarking on a 24-7 run. Mitchell spurred the rally with six steals and six points.

Mitchell finished with 16 points and eight steals and Jamie Farrington led the Bulldogs with 18. Tiffany Watkins scored eight of her 13 points in the third period.

Holly Weber scored 21 for Patrick County (11-2, 1-1), Summer East had 12 and Emily Goad 10.

Narrows 50, Fort Chiswell 28: Aggressive half-court, man-to-man defense was the key to the Green Wave's Mountain Empire District victory over the Pioneers in Narrows.

The Green Wave (10-3, 5-0) held the Pioneers to single-digit scoring in every quarter and their leading scorer to two points. Bud Lucas led the way with 22 points, seven steals and six assists. Suzanne Webb added 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

The Pioneers (6-6, 4-2) were led by Amy Coleman, who had 10 points.

Covington 64, Highland 18: JoAnn Helton scored 22 points to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau in her career as the Cougars routed the Rams in Covington.

Covington (6-4, 2-0) jumped out to 24-point lead at intermission as its defense forced 20 first-half turnovers.

Highland (3-4, 0-2) was led by Jen Jolin with nine points.

Galax 68, Grayson County 53: The Maroon Tide fell behind early but erased the deficit with pressure defense and cruised to the 15-point win over the Blue Devils in a Mountain Empire District game in Galax.

Erin Kyle led Galax (5-0, 8-4) with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Lindsey Carico countered with 27 points for Grayson County (2-3, 3-9).

John Battle 44, George Wythe 37: The Maroons managed only five points in the fourth quarter and dropped a decision to the Trojans in a Hogoheegee District game in Bristol.

George Wythe (6-6, 4-2) was led by Megan Johnson with 19 points. John Battle (2-7, 2-4) was led by Dana Booher's 17 points.

Tiffany Lynch led three Lancers in double figures with 14 points. Brandi Martin added 11 points and Latarri Pritchett had 10.

Bassett (10-3, 0-2) got a team-high 12 points from Jamie Roberts but scored only four points in the decisive third quarter.

Rocky Gap 64, Bland 29: Senior guard Michelle Sarver hit six of her eight 3-point attempts to help the Eagles cruise to a Mountain Empire District victory over the Rockets in Rocky Gap.

Full-court pressure in the first quarter held the Rockets to only two points as the Eagles took an early lead. The Eagles (6-7, 2-3) were led by Sarver with 24 points. Tessa Andrews contributed 10 points, 13 rebounds and three assists.

Jennifer Winters paced the Rockets (0-11, 0-5) with seven points.

Alleghany 53, Christiansburg 35: Katie Craft scored nine of her 19 points in the first quarter as the Mountaineers cruised to a 18-point win over the Demons in a Blue Ridge District game in Low Moor.

Craft, who finished with nine assists, was the beneficiary of a box-and-one defense on teammate Natasha Chapman. Chapman finished the game with 17 points for Alleghany (4-2, 8-3). The Demons were led by Amber Reed with 12 points.

Magna Vista 42, Fieldale-Collinsville 41: At Collinsville, Moranda Wade had 11 points, while Jennifer Taylor and Sandi Reid had 10 apiece in the Warriors' tight Piedmont District victory.

Magna Vista, which was held to one point in the third quarter, improved to 6-5, 1-1. FC (6-7, 0-2) was paced by Jennifer Floyd's 12 points.

Rural Retreat 79, Holston 71: The Indians overcame a 12-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Cavaliers 51-31 in the second half in a Hogoheegee district win in Damascus.

The two teams combined for 70 fouls for the game with the telling stat being that Holston was 22-52 from the free throw line. Rural Retreat (6-5, 3-3) was led by Jane Grubb's 13 points and Amy Grubb added 10 points.

Jefferson Forest 62, Liberty 46: Melinda Mennick scored 11 of her 17 points in the first quarter as the Minutemen fell in Bedford.

Jefferson Forest outscored the Minutemen 37-24 in the first half and never let up.

Selena Byars led Liberty (3-12, 2-4) with 14 points.
