Radford High's Charlee Taylor earned the biggest cheer and, for those who were paying attention, the Bobcats' Amanda Day drew the largest gasp.
It was Shawsville, however, that ultimately won the Three Rivers District girls' basketball game 52-44 Thursday and thus could afford to allow their hosts a little joy themselves.
There was plenty of that to go around after Taylor, the splendid senior point guard, scored her 1,000th career point. The milestone was reached with the first of a two-shot free throw (she missed the second) with 4 minutes, 34 seconds left in the game. Taylor went on to hit two more foul shots a couple of minutes later and eventually finished with 17 points.
She had been 11 points shy of the mark coming in, but wasn't aware of it until right before the game. How did she find out?
``Ah, I'm not sure I should say this, but Tracy Poff told me,'' she said.
That would be the same Tracy Poff who also coaches Shawsville. This is getting to be old hat to him, his team being the foil earlier this season when Narrows' Suzanne Webb nailed her 1,000th at home.
Taylor made only four of 20 shots, 1-for-12 in the first half.
"I tried to put it out of my mind and get the ball to Jenny Greco because she was hot,'' Taylor said. "But yeah, I'm sure the 1,000 was in the back of my mind.''
Radford (8-5 overall, 1-1 in the Three Rivers), which played from behind all night and was down by 15 points to start the fourth quarter, staged a nice rally and had the deficit to 42-40 on Amanda Day's steal and subsequent three-point play with 2:36 left.
``I thought we were going to win it at that point,'' Radford coach Brenda King said.
Shawsville regained its form and made eight of 12 free throws for the balance of the contest to take the starch out of the Bobcats' comeback. Shawsville made 10 of 14 fourth-quarter free throws.
The Shawnees (10-2 overall, 2-0 in the Three Rivers) got 21 points from Sarah Hagood and 18 from Megan Forester.
"Radford beat us three times last year and kept us from going to regionals,'' Megan Forester said. "We wanted to beat them here tonight.''
Jenny Greco scored 10 for Radford, six of that coming in the first minute and a half. Taylor's accomplishment aside (she hit the 1,000 in three years instead of the usual four because she was injured as a sophomore), the most astonishing performance was turned in by Day, who had 20 rebounds.
"She's a bear on the boards,'' King said.
As for Shawsville, Beth Burdette at the point had a big game with eight assists. Shawsville only had six turnovers for the game, three after three quarters.
