CROSS-STITCH ART ON DISPLAY

Cross-stitch art by Don Hufford is on exhibit at the Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley during October, and the artist will attend a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the center.

The exhibit, "Through the Needle's Eye," is the first in the center's renovated gallery and gift shop where new carpeting and paint have been added and a new configuration completed. The center is located at 21 W. Main St., Pulaski.

In 1984, Hufford contracted a bacterial infection that left him in a coma for 10 weeks and affected his motor skills before a then-experimental drug saved his life. Family members got him working on latch-hook rugs to try and restore the use of his hands. Soon, he worked himself down to the fine details of cross-stitch, which became his passion.

Now retired, Hufford spends much of his time on cross-stitch pieces as gifts for friends or family. He seldom works for pay.

Many of the 81 pieces displayed are on loan. They range from P. Buckley Moss designs to Civil War pieces and include afghans, quilts, pillows and more.
