Sunday marks the 129th anniversary of the founding of historic Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church, 580 High St., Christiansburg. Capt. Charles S. Schaeffer, a Union officer in the Civil War who later became a Baptist minister, dedicated himself to organizing the church and to working for better relations between the races. Special services on Sunday at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. will feature the Rev. Vincent Palmer II of Rehoboth Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., and his choir. Call 382-3863 for more information.

*St. Michael Lutheran Church, 2308 Merrimac Road, Blacksburg, begins the fall schedule of services with Sunday worship at 9 and 11 a.m. Communion is weekly at the first service, and on the first and third Sundays at the later service. ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS
*The fall revival at Morgan's Chapel United Methodist Church, New River Road, Radford begins today with a 7 p.m. gospel singfest featuring the Luper family from Galax. Grady Winegar will speak at the 11 a.m. Sunday service. Pastor Will Shewey will lead revival services Monday through Friday nights at 7 p.m. Nursery is provided. 639-5185.
*A gallery featuring works of local artists entitled "The World is Our Community" opens 6-8 p.m. today at Glade Baptist Church, 1600 Glade Road, Blacksburg. Roanoke Symphony violinist Erik Leveille and strings students from the Renaissance Academy will entertain at the community lawn party. Bring a picnic dinner. *A tri-community revival begins Sunday at First Missionary Baptist Church, New River. The L.A. Lewis Singers from Roanoke will be in concert at 4 p.m. The Rev. Lee Suggs, Schaeffer Memorial Baptist, Christiansburg will lead 7 p.m. services Monday through Thursday.
*Several small groups for spiritual growth will begin Tuesday at Grove United Methodist Church, 1020 Tyler Ave., Radford. Four will meet from 7 to 8:15 on Tuesday nights with the topics of "Prayer" "The Psalms," "Parenting" and "Healing and Wholeness." The Rev. John K. Boyd, a retired Presbyterian minister from Dublin, will teach the class on "The Psalms."
Another class, "Encountering Jesus," will be offered on Wednesday mornings from 10 to 11:15 starting Oct. 9 led by Grove members Betty Hines and Betty Jo Lester. All classes are open to the community.
*Revival services will be held at Ellett Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1264 Misty Hill Circle, Blacksburg, from Friday through Oct. 13. Friday and Saturday's services will be at 7 p.m. and Sunday's services will be 10:15 a.m. and 7 p.m. 639-5664.
*A Marriage Enrichment retreat, sponsored by the Church of the Brethren, is scheduled Oct. 18 to 20 at Camp Bethel Conference Center in Botetourt County. The three-day event is for couples of any stage of marriage who wish to make their good relationships better and is not professional counseling.
