ATKINS, Mildred Simms, 80, of Blacksburg, died Friday, October 4, 1996, at her home. She was born September 15, 1916, in Franklin County, VA, to the late James A. and Velera Simms. Mrs. Atkins is survived by her husband, Grover W. Atkins, Blacksburg; a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Hazel Simms, Martinsville, VA; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Bob and Nell Ross, Bill and Kellie Ross, all of Blacksburg, and Betsy and Cully Hession, Wallingford, PA. Mrs. Atkins was a longtime member of the Slussers Chapel Church of God and also of the Women of the Church of God. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 6, 1996 at Slussers Chapel with the Rev. Jesse T. Woodward and Rev. Richard Gilbert officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, October 5, 1996 at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg. BARGER, Carrie Isabeth Virginia Staton, 84, of Buena Vista, died Friday, October 4, 1996, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born May 15, 1912 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Houston and Lillie Henson Staton. She was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Buena Vista, and the widow of Charles Lewis Barger. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Barger and Margaret Phillips, both of Buena Vista; two sons, William L. Barger, Buena Vista, and Thurman E. Barger, Chester; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. The funeral service will be Monday, October 7, 1996, at 2 p.m. at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. David Bain officiating. Interment will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. BOWMAN, Howard Green, 80, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, October 4, 1996 in a Roanoke hospital. A native of Carroll County, he was the son of the late L awrence and Geneva Hendricks Bowman. A long time coal miner, he later retired from Eli Lilly Corporation, Roanoke. He was a member of Hollins Road Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Retta Burleson Bowman; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda B. and Robert C. Puckett, Roanoke; a son, David Wayne Bowman, Roanoke; three grandchildren, Renae Puckett, Diane Owens, Michael T. Locher; two great-grandchildren, Robyn Owens, Allison Owens; a brother, Leonard Bowman, West Virginia; two sisters, Vicie McVey, West Virginia, Bessie Lilly, Titusville, Fl. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m., Monday, October 7, 1996, from Oakey's North Chapel. The Rev. Mark Washington and the Rev. Charles R. Doyle will officiate. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Oakey's North Chapel.
BROWN, George Dabney, 85, of 118 West Rainbow Dr., Bridgewater, died Thursday, October 3, 1996, in the Bridgewater Home where he was a resident. He was born in Fairfield on December 16, 1910, and was a son of the late Herbert W. and Mary Sizer Brown. He had lived in Bridgewater since the late 1970's, moving from Waynesboro, where he was the Vice-President at the First Merchants Bank, now Nations Bank. He was a graduate of Dunsmore Business College, had attended Davidson College, and later years taught banking courses at the Blue Ridge Community College. He was active in the Kiwanis and various other civic clubs in Waynesboro. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro, where he also was an Elder, Deacon, and taught Sunday School. After moving to Bridgewater he moved his membership to the Bridgewater Presbyterian Church, where he served as Elder, and was a member of the Session. He is survived by his wife, Henrietta ``Ann'' Wolford Brown of the Bridgewater Home; one half brother, John H. Brown of Fairfield; a half sister, Margaret R. Brown of Fairfield. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, October 6, in the Memorial Chapel at the Bridgewater Home with the Revs. John Oldman and Evelyn L. Shenk officiating. Entombment will follow in the August Memorial Cemetery in Fishersville. The family will receive friends at the Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater Saturday between the hours of 4 to 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be mate to the Bridgewater Presbyterian Church, 110 E. CLARK, Odessie Irene, 72, of Lexington, died Thursday, October 3, 1996, in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Mrs. Clark was born November 13, 1923 in Rockbridge County, a daughter of the late Granville Clark and Brucie Vess Clark. She was a member of the Union View Advent Christian Church. Mrs. Clark was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Emmett (Dick) Clark; a son, Marion Eugene Clark; and a special friend, Joyce Falls. Surviving are four children, Danny Lee Clark, Rita Kay Orange, Robert Junior Clark, Katherine Diane and husband, Johnny Camden, all of Lexington; one sister, Elsie Hostetter, Clifton Forge; one nephew, Roscoe Hostetter, Clifton Forge; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, October 6, 1996, at the Union View Advent Christian Church with Pastor Robert Daniel and the Rev. Brad Langdon officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington.

MASON, Judson Finney, 90, of Route 5, Martinsville, the Snow Creek Community, died October 3, 1996 in a local nursing home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Bryant Mason and a son Jerry Scott Mason. Surviving are thr ee daughters and sons-in-laws, Joyce and J. B. Frith of Lake Placid, Fla; Helen M. and Norman Gryder of Martinsville; Norma Jean and Travis Barrow of Gastonia, N.C.; ten grandchildren, 11 great-grand children, two brothers and a sister in-law, Rudolph Wade Mason of Snow Creek; Karl K. and Catherine Mason of Collinsville and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted Sunday, October 6, at 2 p.m. at the Spring Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, near Appomattox. MITCHAM, Ballard Blackburn, 101, died at his home in Daleville on Thursday, October 3, 1996. He was the last surviving member of his family with a deep-seated heritage in West Virginia. Mr. Mitcham had served as the Postmaster in Stephenson, W.Va., for approximately 20 years. He also ran the local general store in Stephenson for approximately 40 years. As an elementary school teacher, he served Wyoming County students for several years. Before retiring at the age of 89, Mr. Mitcham served as a Lay Minister in the Methodist Church through the State of West Virginia as a circuit riding preacher. After moving to Daleville in 1991, Brother Mitcham became a member of the Botetourt Church of Christ. Ballard Mitcham was preceded in death by his parents; 12 brothers and sisters; two infant children; an adult son, Clyde, as well as his dear wife, Mamie, who died in 1992. His survivors include one daughter, Sherry L. Mitcham of Daleville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Arley and Ruth Mitcham of Kokomo, Ind., and Christopher J. Mitcham of Daleville; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at the Rader Daleville Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, October 6, 1996, at 3 p.m., with Minister Ray C. Murphy of the Botetourt Church of Christ officiating. Interment will follow in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends and relatives from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 1996, at the Rader Daleville Funeral Home. MOORE, Ernestine Saunders, 87, of Radford, died Friday, October 4, 1996, at her home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, October 6, 1996, at First Christian Church with Rev. NAFF, Linda Raye, 54, of Roanoke passed away Friday, October 4, 1996, in a local hospital. Linda was a former long term employee of the Jefferson Surgical Clinic and more recently was employed as a Senior System s Analyst at Atlantic Companies in Roanoke. She was a member of the Cedar Bluff Church of the Brethren. Surviving are her father and mother Millard and Jean Naff of Franklin County; two sisters, Sue Davis and Margaret Waldrop both of Richmond; four nephews, one great nephew. Also, surviving is her beloved lifetime partner Fred Fox of Roanoke and many other special friends. Funeral services will be held at, Oakey's South Chapel from 2 p.m. Sunday, October 6, 1996 with the Rev. Lee and Robin Naff and The Rev. Maurice Wright officiating. SNIDER, Charles Sidney, (``Cub''), 71, of Blacksburg, went to be with our Lord Thursday, October 3, 1996, at Radford Community Hospital. He was born in Montgomery County March 13, 1925. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Nora Snider; and three sisters, Isabelle Burton, Marie Snider, and Edith Albert; his special Aunt Mary Shutt; his son-in-law, Harry ``Jink'' Smith; his father and mother-in-law, Lee and Pearl Price. He was retired from Radford Arsenal with 38 years of service, and was also a veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Della (Gertie) Price Snider; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Barbara Snider, Dublin, Daryl and Dee Snider, McCoy; six daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda Smith, Catawba, Lora and Trevy Donley, Dublin, Sharon and Brian Craig, Bedford, Teresa and Curtis Phillips, Thompson, Ga., Anglia Snider, Louisville, Ky., and Valeria Capobanico and fiance, Doug Phillips, Hopewell Junction, N.Y.; eleven grandsons; and five granddaughters; two great-grandsons; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harry Byrd and Claudine Saville, Donald and Patsy Shepherd, all of Blacksburg, Jerry and Donna Price, and Duckie and Loretta Albert, all of McCoy; numerous cousins of Blacksburg and Tennessee; special friends, Cloyd Hungate, Heather and Spencer Williams, and Jo Anna Hardie. His grandsons will act as honorary pallbearers. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 6, 1996, at Sunnyside Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Dallas Jewell and the Rev. Clayton Swett Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the New Mt. Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery.
