PULASKI COUNTY CRUISES TO HOMECOMING VICTORY

Pulaski County dressed and played all 55 players Friday night in a 41-6 homecoming romp over H.D. Woodson (D.C.) in Dublin.

Pulaski County (5-1) opened the scoring on a 37-yard run by fullback Craig Hodge. Hodge followed that up with a 63-yard touchdown romp and a scoring run of 3 yards as the Cougars opened a 21-0 lead.

Quarterback Ron Branch had a 17-yard touchdown run to end the second quarter and Hodge followed up with 33-yard run to start the third to extend the Cougar lead to 34-0.

Hodge finished with 12 carries for 159 yards and four touchdowns, the second consecutive week he has rushed for four touchdowns. Hodge has rushed for 335 yards and eight touchdowns combined against Science Hill and Woodson (2-3). The Cougars rushed for 324 yards.

Senior J.R. Brown intercepted two passes.

Rockbridge County 21, Christiansburg 13: Jeremy Ramsey rushed eight times for 47 yards and a touchdown as the Wildcats (3-2, 2-0) held on for a Blue Ridge District victory over the Demons (2-3, 0-2) in Lexington.

Ramsey also had 22 tackles as a linebacker to add to his offensive contributions. Clay Hobson rushed 18 times for 74 yards and a touchdown. Clay Hobson carried the ball 18 times for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Jesse Wallace knocked down a pass on a Demon two-point conversion attempt in the fourth quarter to hold the Wildcat lead at 21-13.

Mike Scott rushed for 155 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries to lead the Demons.

Blacksburg 27, Alleghany 24 (2 OT): Mike Davis' third touchdown of the game, a 7-yard run in the second overtime, gave the Indians the Blue Ridge District win over the visiting Mountaineers.

Davis, who also scored on runs 20 and three yards, finished with 157 yards on 33 carries for Blacksburg (2-3, 1-1). Davis' second touchdown with 9:22 left forced the overtime sessions.

Shannon Johnson threw two touchdown passes for Alleghany (1-4, 0-2), a 36-yard strike to Robert Nicely in the second quarter and a 5-yard pass to Ben Perkins in the first overtime.

Shawsville 40, Narrows 28: Anthony Creasy and Chris Graham scored three touchdowns each to help the Shawnees (3-2) hold on to a lead to over the Green Wave (2-4) for a non-district victory in Shawsville.

Creasey rushed 25 times for 173 yards and Graham rushed for 170 yards on 22 carries.

The Green Wave rallied from a 34-8 deficit to get within 34-28, but Creasey scored on a 2-yard run to seal the victory for the Shawnees.

James River 29, Bath County 0: Brian LeFlore rushed for 212 yards and a touchdown to lead the Knights to a Pioneer District upset of the defending state-champion Chargers in Buchanan.

LeFlore started the scoring with a 6-yard run in the first quarter and James River's defense made it stand up, led by linebacker Billy Joe Carter, who had 25 tackles.

Will Goad scored for the defense, returning a pass interception 29 yards for a touchdown. Josh Peck had a 21-yard touchdown reception and Anthony Burrell capped the scoring with a 6-yard run in the third quarter.

The Knights (2-3, 1-0) repelled every Bath County offensive surge and halted the Chargers' most serious threat by recovering a fumble deep in James River territory in the second quarter.

Brandon Woodard led Bath County (3-2, 0-1) with 92 yards on 22 carries.

Cave Spring 14, Franklin County 10: Brad Nichols bolted 80 yards for a touchdown on the first offensive play of the game and finished with 224 yards rushing to lead the Knights to a Roanoke Valley District victory over the visiting Eagles.

Nichols burst through a hole in the center of the line and outran Franklin County defenders to the end zone as Cave Spring (1-5, 1-0) started a series of offensive fireworks.

Franklin County (2-4, 0-1) retaliated on its first offensive play when Josh Hale hauled in a pass from Bobby Basham and raced 76 yards for a touchdown.

On the ensuing kickoff, Travis Cooper tried to outdo everybody by going 99 yards for another Cave Spring touchdown, but the play was nullified by an illegal block penalty.

That was not the last of the big plays. In the third quarter, Matt Berger blocked a Franklin County punt and Aaron Williams fell on it in the end zone for what proved to be the winning touchdown.

Each team had an impressive goal-line stand on defense to prevent points. Franklin County stopped Nichols inside the 1 on a fourth-down play in the third quarter and Cave Spring kept Henry Eggleston out of the end zone on a fourth-down play.

Franklin County was held to just 20 yards rushing.

Chatham 40, Laurel Park 13: Telvis Fitzgerald had 139 on 13 carries with three three touchdowns as Chatham won in a non-district game in Martinsville.

Liberty 46, Rustburg 6: Robert Carson's second game at quarterback continued to provide benefits for Minutemen as they swamped teh Devils in a Seminole District game in Bedford.

Carson threw three touchdown passes. He completed eight of 10 passes for 140 yards. Meanwhile, Gerry Staples rushed for 56 yards and scored three touchdowns, including one on a 53-yard pass to give Liberty (4-2 overall, 2-0 in the Seminole) a balanced attack.

Parry McCluer 28, Wilson Memorial 14: Daniel Clark scored a pair of touchdowns as Parry McCluer (4-2) rolled to a non-district victory over Wilson Memorial.

Carroll County 12, Patrick County 0: Trey Manning rushed for 177 yards and one touchdown on 25 carries to help the Cavaliers come up with a non-district victory over the Cougars in Hillsville.

Manning scored the first of only two touchdowns in the game on a 50-yard run in the first quarter. Jeremy Overfelt scored on a 55-yard run. Penalties and two dropped touchdown passes prevented the Cavaliers (4-2) from doing further damage.

The Cougars (0-5) were also troubled by penalties and had only 78 yards total offense.

Buffalo Gap 40, Covington 20: Brian Tutwiler ran for three touchdowns and Rob Shirley also accounted for three - one rushing and two passing - as the Bison defeated the Cougars in a non-district matchup in Buffalo Gap.

Tutwiler had scoring runs of 74 and 42 yards in the first half as Buffalo Gap (2-3) built a 21-6 lead. Tutwiler finished with 138 yards rushing.

Covington (0-5) closed to 21-12 when Robbie Griffin scored on a 1-yard run early in the second half after the Bison fumbled. But Shirley scored on a 63-yard run and threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Moore as Buffalo Gap took control.

Griffin finished with two touchdowns for the Cougars. Moore had three receptions for 113 yards and two touchdowns, and his interception in the fourth quarter sealed the victory.

Grayson County 28, Galax 9: Chad Carico rushed for 161 yards on 15 carries to lead Grayson County to a 28-9 Mountain Empire District victory over Galax. Carico scored on runs of 59 and 49 yards, both coming on the opening play of Blue Devils' drives. Chad McMillian also scored a pair of touchdowns in the victory.

The Grayson County (3-2, 3-0) defense allowed just 90 yards of total offense on the evening. Galax falls to 1-5, 0-3 with the loss.

Bassett 33, Dan River 0: The Bengals (4-2) used a balanced rushing attack and a stingy defense to shut out the Wildcats (3-2) in a non-district matchup in Bassett.

Carl Watkins led the ground assault with 128 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Chanucey Norman had 65 yards and a touchdowns on seven carries and was on the receiving end of T.K. Johnson's 10-yard scoring pass.

Johnson added 64 yards and a touchdown rushing, and Corie Manns rushed for 61 yards on three carries.

The Bengals' defense held Dan River to 31 yards rushing and 48 passing.

Bland County 12, George Wythe 8 The Bears' picked off a Hail Mary at the eight yard line on the last play of the game to defeat the Maroons in a non-district game in Bland.

Bland County (4-2) took a safety with 22 seconds left in the fourth and held on for the six point win. The Bears gained only 165 yards of total offense while George Wythe (0-6) could muster only 138 yards of total offense. Damian Taylor led all rushers with 104 yards on 28 carries for the Maroons.

Fieldale-Collinsville 20, William Campbell 8: Joe Favero kicked returned an interception for a touchdown, kicked two field goals and converted two extra-point kicks in the Cavaliers' non-district win at Collinsville.

Phillip Hairston scored the game's first touchdown with a 13-yard first-quarter run. Favero kicked a 23-yard field goal in the second , a 20-yarder in the third then returned an interception 65 yards in the fourth.

William Campbell is 1-4.

Magna Vista 35, Heritage 7: The Warriors defense put the clamps on the Pioneers by allowing only 84 yards of total offense in a non-district win in Ridgeway.

Magna Vista (5-0) intercepted three Pioneer passes in the win. Travis Preston rushed for 87 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns and Chad Blackstock rushed for 54 yards on eight carries and two touchdowns and passed for 84 yards. Heritage fell to 1-4 on the season.

Martinsville 7, Tunstall 0: Manti Venable scored the only touchdown in the second quarter of a non-district defensive struggle at Tunstall.

The teams combined for just 293 yards of total offense. Martinsville (5-0) had just four first downs, only one in the first half. The Bulldogs' only score came after a Tunstall fumble.

Tunstall (1-4) fumbled twice in the game. The first set up Martinsville's only scoring drive, as Venable rumbled 17 yards for a touchdown and Jess Wade kicked the conversion.

Martinsville's Jason Wade picked off a pass in the end zone to end Tunstall's final scoring threat.
