TECH WOMEN STUNG BY LOSS OF TOP PLAYER

The Virginia Tech women's basketball team received a jolt Friday when coach Carol Alfano announced that leading scorer Michelle Hollister had withdrawn from school for personal reasons.

As a sophomore last season, Hollister led the Hokies in scoring (17.3 points), rebounds (9.1) and steals (53) en route to earning second-team All-Atlantic 10 honors. The Yardley, Pa., native established school records for a sophomore in points, scoring average and rebounds.

Tech, which was 11-17 last season, opens practice Oct.15 in preparation for its Nov.22 season opener against UNC Greensboro.

* Fork Union Military Academy ran its football record to 5-0 with a 16-7 victory over Virginia Tech's junior varsity team in Blacksburg.

Tech led 7-6 after quarterback Mike Kocicka threw a 78-yard touchdown pass to Ken Handy and Chris Segaar added the conversion. Fork Union went ahead 9-7 on Brent White's 41-yard field goal. A 5-yard TD run by Derick Pack after a Tech punting miscue completed the scoring.

Tech (0-1) managed only 143 yards total offense, including 40 on the ground. Tailback Aaron Layne had 63 yards on 12 carries for the Hokies.

* Brian McFarlane scored the game-winning goal as Virginia Tech downed Massachusetts 3-1 in double overtime in an Atlantic 10 men's soccer game in Blacksburg.

Roanoke's Bobby Warnick and Cory Turner scored the other Tech goals. Tech improved to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in the league. UMass fell to 5-3-1, 2-1.

* Pete Lampman, president of Roanoke's Virginia Amateur Sports, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the National Congress of State Games.

The National Congress is the sanctioning body for the Commonwealth Games of Virginia, which have been held in Roanoke since 1990. VAS is the local organizer for the Commonwealth Games.

Lampman was elected to a one-year term on the board and will represent Region I consisting of 13 mid-Atlantic and northeastern states from Virginia to Maine. Lampman will serve on the Athlete of the Year Committee and will chair the National Competition Committee.

The latter committee's task is to study the feasibility of holding a national, Olympics-style competition by 1998.

It was also announced that Roanoke will be the sight of the 1998 National Congress of State Games Symposium.
