Bureau changes

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Roanoke Times has named Brian Kelley assistant editor of its New River Valley Bureau.

Kelley replaces Madelyn Rosenberg, who moved to the features department in Roanoke as an interim editor and now as a feature writer.

Before becoming acting assistant editor in March, Kelley had worked as a reporter in the bureau since 1993 covering Montgomery County government.

Kelley previously worked as a bureau chief and assistant editorial page editor at the Potomac News in Woodbridge. He also reported for the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the Newport News Daily Press after graduation from the University of Virginia.

In other staff changes, Lisa Garcia has joined the staff as a reporter after completing an internship at the paper this summer. She covers law enforcement and courts in the New River Valley.

Garcia, a Virginia Tech graduate, has worked in the Roanoke newsroom since 1994. She headed the newsroom's team of editorial assistants before moving to the New River Valley Bureau. Previously, she worked for four years as a reporter with the Milford Times in Nebraska.

Mark Clothier has joined the staff as a reporter covering business and Blacksburg. Clothier replaces Elissa Milenky, who left to spend time on a kibbutz in Israel.

Clothier, a graduate of the University of Florida, came to the bureau from the Herald-Mail in Hagerstown, Md., where he covered education. He also had worked as a general assignment reporter part time with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Mary Lou Bruton has moved to the bureau as an editorial assistant, handling the Current Events calendar each Sunday, the In Religion column and the People column.

Bruton has worked at the paper's Roanoke office for three years in its composing room. She is a graduate of Wake Forest University.
