Parents of Scouts belonging a West Springfield troop were outraged after a judge gave a Boy Scout leader a suspended sentence for exposing himself in front of one Scout and performing a sex act in front of another.
Circuit Judge Jack Stevens could have sentenced Raymond G. McCumber, 33, of Springfield, to up to 15 years in prison for two counts of custodial and indecent acts against a minor and one count of proposing a sexual act to a minor. Instead, Stevens sentenced McCumber on Friday to a total of nine years, but he suspended the jail time.
``I think he got his wrist slapped,'' said the father of one boy. ``I think it's woefully inadequate.
The mother of the other boy added: ``My boy's falling apart.''
Stevens also ordered McCumber to undergo more mental health counseling, to have no further contact with minors.
McCumber pleaded guilty in August to two counts of indecent acts and no contest to the propositioning charge.
At the time of the incidents, McCumber, who is married with two small children, was an assistant Scoutmaster of the Boy Scout troop sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in West Springfield. The victims also were members of the church, where McCumber also was a church youth group leader.
