AKERS, Lucille Josephine, of Roanoke, died Friday, October 4, 1996. Miss. Akers was retired from the N & W Railway with over 45 years of service. She was a lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church. Surviving are a niece, Mrs. Sandra Akers Ivey, Pine Knoll Shores, N.C.; two great-nephews, Jeffrey D. Hagen, Charleston, S.C., Matthew R. Hagen of Morehead City, N.C.; also a number of cousins, including Mrs. Frances Jo Harkins, Merritt Island, Fla. Services will be at the graveside in Fairview Cemetery, 10 a.m. Monday. D r. Harry Y. ATKINS, Mildred Simms, 80, of Blacksburg, died Friday, October 4, 1996, at her home. She was born September 15, 1916, in Franklin County, VA, to the late James A. and Velera Simms. Mrs. Atkins is survived by her husband, Grover W. Atkins, Blacksburg; two sisters, Mrs. Ardie (Essie) Scott, Collinsville, Va; and Mrs. John (Edith) Radford, Blacksburg; a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Hazel Simms, Martinsville, VA; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Bob and Nell Ross, Bill and Kellie Ross, all of Blacksburg, and Betsy and Cully Hession, Wallingford, PA. Mrs. Atkins was a longtime member of the Slussers Chapel Church of God and also of the Women of the Church of God. AYERS, Thurman Edgar, 69, of Buchanan, died Friday, October 4,1996. Mr. Ayers had retired from Burlington Industries-Glasgow, with over 40 years service and was presently employed by the Botetourt County School System as a School Bus Driver. BRUBAKER, Florence Mae, 82, of Callaway, formerly of Lapel, Indiana, died Saturday, October 5, 1996 in the local hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, Owen and Susie Miller Sides, a brother, Charles, and a sister, Pyllis Yoder, two daughters, Lois Elaine and Rebecca Jane Brubaker. Surviving are her husband, Emmett N. COLEMAN, Lorene Wheeling, 81, of Hillsville, passed away Saturday, October 5, 1996 in Twin County Regional Hospital. She was born February 22, 1915 in Mercer County , W.Va., daughter of the late Cecil Wheeling and Martha Taylor Wheeling. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Amy and Chester Webb, Fancy Gap, Marie and David Runyon, Dublin; son and d aughter-in-law, Bert and Zula Coleman, Hillsville; two grandsons, Randall Webb, Bradley Webb; one great-granddaughter, Amanda Webb; two brothers, Ralph Wheeling, Richmond and Ray Wheeling, Fairdale, W. DEARING, Ralph C., 89, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, October 4, 1996. He was a member and former Sunday school teacher at Ghent Grace Brethren Church. He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Nancy Dearing of Roanoke, Robert and Emily Dearing of Pilot, and Jerry and Pam Dearing of Roanoke; eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. GISH, Theodosia Parker, 84, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, October 4, 1996. She was the widow of Hugh T. Gish, and was a member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church. She was the beloved sister of Bettie Parker Talbot of Daleville, and precious aunt to her nieces, Emily Talbot-Guillote of Daleville, Susan Talbot Meloy of Atlanta, Ga., and Carolyn Talbot Corswandt of Bedford; nephews, Les Talbot and Matthew A. Talbot of Roanoke and John N. Parker of Kenner, La., and nine great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel at 12 noon Monday, October 7, 1996, with the Rev. Robert L. Watts officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park. HANES, Richard Nelson, Jr., 74, of Roanoke, died Friday, October 4, 1996. He retired as a Civil Engineer and was an Air Force Veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Mildred B. Hanes; sons and daughter-in-law, Stephen A. and Kay Hanes of Fairfield and Richard N. Hanes III of Atlanta, Ga; two grandsons, Lance Cpl. Mike Hanes, U.S. Marine Corps, American Embassy, and Matt Hanes of Georgia, and sister and brother-in-law, Harriet Jean and Bob Martin of Roanoke. HOBACK, Anna Marie Schneider, 68, of Route 3, Wytheville, died Saturday, October 5, 1996 in a Princeton, West Virginia hospital. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Carroll Gordon of Cripple Creek, Eva and Dennis Vipperman of Rural Retreat; two sons and one daughter-in-law, John and Nanette Hoback of Manassas, Keith Hoback of Centreville; two sisters, Irmgar d Fenger of West Allis, Wisconsin, Ritsch Lanzendorfer of Neutraubling, Germany; and four grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. J. C. McPeak, with interment to follow in the Rosenbaum Chapel Cemetery. HUFFMAN, Julian Johnston, 86, of Lexington, died Saturday, October 5, 1996 at his residence. Born August 9,1910 in Rockbridge County, he was the son of the late E. G. Huffman, Sr. and Nettie J. Huffman. Mr. Huffman was a farmer until his death and was a long time employee of the Virginia Department of Transportation, retiring in 1971. He was a member of the Effinger Ruritan Club and an Elder and Deacon of Oxford Presbyterian Church and was a veteran of World War II, having received the Purple Heart. Surviving are his wife, Isabel Leech Huffman, Lexington; three brothers, E. G. Huffman, Jr., Lexington; Venable M. Huffman, High Point, N.C., Chester I. Huffman, Charles City; one sister, Isabel H. Leech, Lexington; ten nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, October 7, 1996 at 11 a.m. at the Oxford Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Barton Hellmuth, Minister, officiating. Interment will be in Oxford Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Harrison Funeral Home. HYLTON, Gracie J., 54, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, October 5, 1996. She is survived by four daughters and a son-in-law, Brenda Hylton and Tony Meador of Roanoke, Rebecca Hylton of Roanoke, Sandy Keith of Chilhowie and Caroline Haynes of Norton; a sister, Janice Knick of Staunton; a brother, Emmitt Lemon; a special granddaughter, Amber Meador, and a granddaughter, Dana Keith. KELLEY, Mary Ramsey, 87, of Covington, died Saturday, October 5, 1996, at Shenandoah Manor Nursing Home in Clifton Forge. She was born on May 23, 1909, in Greenbrier County, W.Va., the daughter of the late Wallace and Lula Chisolm Ramsey. She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Kelley, and several brothers and sisters. Mrs. Kelley was a member of Faith Baptist Church of Covington. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Earl Cash of Roanoke; her son and daughter-in-law, James and Sue Kelley of Covington; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. John Burnham officiating. Interment will be in Lone Star Cemetery. McFARLAND, Hazel Newcomb, 77, of Roanoke, died Saturday, October 5, 1996. She had been preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Cecil White McFarland, in August of 1994. Mrs. McFarland was a member of Cloverdale Church of the Brethren. Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, Jimmy McFarland of Virginia Beach, and Gary and Linda McFarland of Roanoke; daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and J. T. ROBERTSON, Mary M., 83, of Salem, died Friday, October 4, 1996. She was member of First Christian Church of Salem and Women of the Moose #1022. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett L. (``Bobby"") Robertson. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Doris Robertson of Lafayette; a brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Jackie Musselman, and a sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Carl Moran, all of Salem; two granddaughters and husband, Laura Robertson of Alexandria, and Terri and Bill Fritz of Charlottesville, and a great-grandson, Will Fritz. SCOTT, Evelyn Frances Sloan, 85, of Boones Mill, died Saturday, October 5, 1996 at Burrell Nursing Center in Roanoke. Born August 31, 1911, she was a daughter of the late Jacob and Annie Henry Sloan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon James Scott, who died November 29, 1983. WRIGHT, Glen E., 88, of Hillsvil le, passed away Saturday, October 5, 1996 in the Twin County Regional Hospital. Born January 27, 1908 in Carroll County, Va., he was the son of the late Herbert G. Wright and Dora Cox Wright. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Opal N. Wright and daughter-in-law, Polly G. Wright. He is survived by his wife, Edna R. Wright; two sons and daughter-in-law, R.
