TECH STILL HAS TICKETS FOR WVU

A number of tickets for the Virginia Tech-West Virginia football game Nov. 23 at Lane Stadium will be put on sale Monday morning.

Tech officials said fans can use a Visa or Mastercard to order tickets by calling 1-800-828-3244, or they can purchase tickets at Cassell Coliseum. The Big East Football Conference game had been announced as a sellout, but Tech students did not pick up their full allotment for the game.

SOCCER W&L women fall in ODAC showdown

Washington and Lee's women dropped their first game of the season, falling 1-0 to Randolph-Macon in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game in Lexington.

Carrie Hall scored what proved to be the game-winner six minutes into the second half. The Yellow Jackets (10-1 overall, 5-0 conference) are ranked 22nd in the nation and fourth in the South Region in the latest National Soccer Coaches' Association of America poll. Washington and Lee (7-1, 5-1) is No.8 in the region.

* Kelly Moran's two goals lifted Radford to a 3-1 victory over Richmond at the Dedmon Center fields.

The Highlanders (3-7) trailed 1-0 before Kelly Reischer scored at the 22-minute mark of the second half to tie the score. Moran's goal with 11 minutes remaining was the winner, and she added the insurance goal with a little more than a minute to play in the game. Nikki Bonilla scored the lone goal for Richmond (3-5-1).

* Georgia Southern scored five goals in the first half and cruised to a 6-1 victory over VMI in a Southern Conference game in Statesboro, Ga. Mike Polhamus scored the Keydets' goal with seven minutes remaining.

* Eric Ruano and Derek Zimmerman scored goals for Radford as they defeated Maryland-Baltimore County in a Big South Conference men's game in Baltimore. Zimmerman scored the winner on an indirect free kick early in the second half.

* Washington and Lee defeated ODAC foe Guilford 4-1 in Lexington. The Generals (6-1, 3-1) took a 3-0 lead before Guilford scored at the 77 minute mark. Jamie Parker had two goals for W&L.

* Roanoke College's Lisa Franzino scored the winning goal 16 minutes into the second half as the Maroons defeated Virginia Wesleyan 2-1 in an ODAC women's game in Virginia Beach. Amy Waldron scored first for Roanoke (9-3, 6-1) 13 minutes into the second half. The Marlins (4-4-1, 2-2-0) got their goal from Mandy Nixon at the 10-minute mark of the first half.

* Campbell University scored a 2-0 overtime victory over Virginia Tech in Buies Creek, N.C. Fuzzy Robertson scored both goals in the overtime session to give the Camels (5-6-1) the nonconference victory. Tech's record is 4-5-1.

* Hollins College dropped a 5-0 decision to visiting Wooster (7-1). Hollins is 3-6.

* First Union Bank is sponsoring the First Union Columbus Day Cup Soccer Tournament Saturday and Oct.13 at the River's Edge complex in Roanoke and the Berglund Soccer Complex in Vinton. The tournament features 48 teams from four states. Matches begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday and conclude at 3 p.m. on Oct.13.

ETC. Tech's Mayo alive in Southern tennis

Third-seeded Oliver Mayo of Virginia Tech advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 1996 Southern Collegiate Tennis Championship in Athens, Ga. The senior All-American defeated Zak Blanchard of Louisiana State 7-6, 6-7, 6-2. He will take on eighth-seeded Eddie Jaques of Georgia.

* Roanoke College knocked off Randolph-Macon 3-2 in a double-overtime ODAC field hockey game at Alumni Field.

The Maroons (5-3, 3-2) trailed 2-0 at halftime against the Yellow Jackets (8-3, 4-1). Two second-half goals by Christine Boyle forced overtime. Tina Boyce scored the winner for the Maroons.

* Jonnie Lee's goal 1:13 into the first overtime gave American a 2-1 victory over Radford in a Colonial Athletic Association game at the Dedmon Center fields. Radford (7-4, 1-2) was outshot 24-7.
