Aker-Whittaker
Amy Lee Aker and Marshall Travis Whittaker are engaged and planning to be married on April 5, 1997 in Roanoke.
She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry and Glenda Aker of Vinton. She graduated from William Byrd High School, is a senior at Radford University, and is employed at The Limited and First Union National Bank.
He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry and Ernestine Whittaker of Rocky Mount. He graduated from Franklin County High School, Virginia Western Community College and Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy, and is employed by Franklin County Sheriff's Department.
Bean-Williams
Mr. and Mrs. M.W. Holtzman, Jr,. of Lebanon Church, VA, have announced the engagement of their daughter Elaine to Eddie Ray Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin H. Willia ms, Sr., of Salem, VA.
Miss Bean is employed by The Virginian Travel Center in Tom's Brook, VA.
Mr. Williams is a driver for Bayse Transportation of Salem, VA.
The couple will reside in Lebanon Church, VA.

Canfield-Barr
Mr. and Mrs. Michael Barr of Matthews, NC, announce the engagement of their son, Chad Michael Barr to Angela Marie Canfield of Matthews. Angela is the daughter of Mr. Alan Canfield of LeRaysville, PA, and Ms. Georgiana Canfield of Candor, NY. Chad is the grandson of Mrs. Mildred Brooks of Roanoke and the late Russell A. Brooks. The wedding is planned for Jan. 11, 1997 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Catatonk, NY.
Angela is a graduate of Candor H.S. and attended Broome Community College. Chad is a graduate of East Mecklenburg H.S. and attends Kings College.
DeFrance-Withers
Retired Col. and Mrs. Rudolph DeFrance of Carlisle announce the engagement of their daughter, Mary Eleanor DeFrance, to Gregory Northern Withers. He is the son of Harry N. Withers Jr. and Frances K. White, both of Roanoke, Va.
The bride-to-be, a graduate of Oldfields School in Glencoe, Md., and Hollins College in Roanoke, Va., is a lending officer with First Union Corp. of Washington, D.C.

Graham-Clark
Sandy Bolt Graham and Lloyd ``Doc'' Eastlack Clark, Jr. are engaged and planning to marry in June of 1997, in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Bolt of Blue Ridge. He is a son of Mrs. Susan C. Shrewsberry of Roanoke and Mr. Lloyd E. Clark, Sr. of Halifax County.
Hofer-Shupe
Cheryl Hofer and Chris Shupe will be married on November 2, 1996. The couple will be ending a long engagement that began March 6, 1994 in Wilmington, N.C.
Cheryl, who is the daughter of Zurna and Charles Hofer of Roanoke, Va., graduated from Cave Spring High School, Virginia Western Community College and attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and plans to attend Virginia Tech in the spring.
Chris, who is the son of Lois Shupe of Roanoke, Va., and Ralph Shupe of Richmond, Va., graduated from Cave Spring High School and attended Virginia Western Community College and is a salesman at 1st Team Automall.
Nelson-Childress
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Donald Chappell and Mr. and Mrs. Russell Edward Nelson of Roanoke proudly announce the engagement of their daughter, Laurie Ellen Nelson of Richmond, to John Stinson Childress, also of Richmond. John is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Kent Childress of New Canton, Virginia.
