One person died and three others were hospitalized after fire destroyed an apartment.
The three survivors managed to escape with the help of a neighbor, authorities said. They were taken to Mary Washington Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and heat exposure.
The fire was reported Saturday shortly after 5:30 a.m. An apartment upstairs from a trading post was engulfed in flames, said Lt. Paul Hertz of the Falmouth Volunteer Fire Department.
The apartment was destroyed. ``There's nothing left. They lost everything up there,'' Hertz said.
The severity of the blaze impeded search and rescue operations. The body of the dead man was found once the fire was extinguished.
An autopsy on the dead man, whose identity was being withheld, will be performed Monday at the medical examiner's office in Richmond, the county fire marshal's office said.
