PCHS MARCHES PAST COMPETITORS

The marching band at Pulaski County High School came away with four first-place finishes at the band competition in Chilhowie Sept. 28. The Golden Cougars received top awards in the parade, percussion, drum major and color guard categories. The group also received a superior rating and first place overall in its class; classes are based on school enrollment. The Cougars also received the highest score of any other band in every category.

The marching band includes 129 students in grades nine through 12. The group is led by drum major Tom Westmoreland and assistant drum major Katie Webb. The group's performance and show this season is based on "The Wizard of Oz." Jim Moore, band director, said the students wanted to do a coordinated package and the Wizard of Oz was selected because it was musical and recognizable.

The Pulaski marching band will host this year's state Marching Band Festival Oct. 19. Bands from schools around the commonwealth will compete. Competition starts at 1 p.m. The event is open to the public.
